If shorty shows this attitude from time to time, you've made a wonderful portrait of him. No matter if he's just acting, that pose is so great that we imagine all sorts of ideas in his head that make this picture exceptional.

That is one thing I love about candid captures. Your not guiding someone to show some emotion or pose them to get that feeling. Your capturing whatever emotion or feeling that is already in progress.
What do you think about the crop? I'm thinking I should take another 1/8 inch off the left side of the frame.

Jake,
I rather keep the mental disturbance as it as dramatic and life-like and the placement fits with the spontaneity of the facial expression.
We must be careful not to perfect things or else we polish away the very irregularities which make the work genuine. IOW, "perfection is the death of art!", one of my ever present thoughts.

i really like this direct work. how does the colour version look ?
square croping with faces can produce intreasting flips - if you took some off the left - you could square it by doing the same to the bottom of the image - when this face becomes centered the a symetry of the face is ehanced (for me that is)...
its a good image to work with because its so good to start with.
