I like the patch of colour in the mostly monochrome environment.

Is the colour real or was it added later?

The stripe of light guides the viewer, even with the light distraction on the upper left.

Maybe I would have removed a little from the lower portion or slightly enlarged to the left (if the photo was cut from a larger original), but this is a matter of personal taste.

Thanks for showing.

Daniel,

Once again, a highly precisely conceived subject and execution. This seems to fit in with the previous image you shared of a man locking his store at the end of the day. Again, a large real estate of the canvas is used for atmosphere and territory of the small bur important and focussed subject.

This, if it's your motif, is a great set of guiding parameters for you. I hope it ois indeed how you will be photographing as it gives your work efficiency and incidentally, a stamp of recognition.

Michael,

I think that is the "metachromatic" effect of light on a thin layer of oil over water. As far as cropping it further, I'd leave at as for sure a conscious personal decision was made and that's Daniel's esthetic choice and not, I think a naive mistake, although your comment is indeed worthy and valid.

Asher,

I am aware of the diffraction/reflection and resulting interference created by a thin layer of oil on water responsible for the colours seen, but the little waves created by drops did not have the effect on the colour distribution I expected, so I am not sure. The resolution of the picture could also play a role here...

The different cut I thought of (enlarging to the left and cutting a bit below) is just my personal taste and indicated as such. It would just make another (not necessarily smaller) canvas for the patch of colour.

I like this one very much.

thank you thoroughly for your critiques gentlemen

for reference the image is completely Unretouched, the coloration comes from a neon light just out of frame

the photo was taken in late december in downtown Los Angeles during some particularly terrifying storms that hit the area, and I of course being somewhat idiotic decided to put on a coat, and really test the weatherproofing on my camera.

I shot the image in the Little Tokyo district of downtown, where there is no shortage of colorful lighting

@michael- i too considered cropping the image for a moment, but as someone whos style is still developing, I try not to crop at all, to challenge myself compositionally and hone my skills as the type of photographer who doesnt just point and shoot but rather takes the time and has the chops to nail the shot in one try.

thanks to both of you!

Daniel, this is a beautiful image for its stark simplicity an atmosphere. I love it, and would not change a thing - except to perhaps tone down the saturation a tiny bit. And it deserves a good frame, to give the image some breathing room.

Ah, I sometimes do miss photographing in colour...
