I have had a busy and enjoyable last couple of weeks, exposing my photography to relatively large audiences on the streets.
2 weekends ago, the town of Clinton where our daughter has her Main Street store (Raven and Zoey Boutique) closed down the blocks from traffic, for their Heritage Festival. Vintage cars and vendors lined the streets of downtown. Rachel made arrangements with the town, for me to set up a display of my photography on the sidewalk in front of her store. Passersby had to walk through the tent area to get around town.
Last weekend, Rachel provided a space inside her tent display for the very popular Volkfest in Goderich Ontario. Thousands of people flowed through the downtown square viewing hundreds of VW’s and the many vendors.
Then this Tuesday morning, Anne and I dropped into a trendy little coffee shop about 45min from our home, and got up the courage to go ask the owner if she would ever be interested in displaying and selling a selection of my photo cards. Fortunately I hadn’t taken the box of remaining cards and extra display racks out of my car from the VW weekend. I brought them (around 150) in for the two women to make their selection from and set them up right on the spot. Bekah said that she wanted to start with a selection of 15 cards and see how the interest is. As well she wanted to purchase them outright on a wholesale level instead of have me leave them and collect as they sell.
The two were so excited. In fact Brie selected one of my cards from Guatemala and handed me the $10 retail price because she loved the card and connected with her travels to Central America.
The nice thing for me is that I am not actively desiring to pursue these displays for the sake of making money. It’s just so enjoyable that many people are thumbing through my work and enjoying the experience. The small number of sales each month are just a little bonus.
