Sneaky install

Today my firewall alerted me that McAfee HTML UI Container was trying to access the internet.

Now, I've never had McAfee on my PC, so how did it get there?

Task Manager told me that a process called mcuicnt.exe was running. I did a search for it and found a McAfee folder in Program Files. Nothing to do with me, as (previously mentioned) I've never installed or used McAfee.

The file properties showed that the file was created on July 6th at 19:29.

A search of my history folder revealed that I was updating my Adobe Flash Player at the time.

Here's a (partial) screen shot of part of the update process.

I noticed the Firefox warning at the top of the screen, but assumed it referred to the Flash software. At no time was McAfee mentioned.

I wonder why Adobe would perform a semi-stealth install?

Regards,

Stuart

Stuart,

Adobe does a lot of sneaky things. For example, if you process currency/bank note files, the program, at least of 4-5 years ago, would inform the Feds! Of course we all know that Microsoft and Adobe send out stuff on the internet so that they know how many copies of your software are online. It could be that they use MacAfee for some of these stealth tasks.

I have noticed this as well on a couple different computers, one running vista and the other running win7, both while updating the flash player from firefox.

On both machines when I opened firefox it prompted me to update my flash player and it took me to a page that was "before" the screen shot you have displayed here where there was a box that was already check marked to install McAfee, both times I noticed it right after I clicked the install button. When the screen that you have displayed here popped up I hit the back button and unchecked the McAfee box.

I did have the option to install it or not, but it was preselected to be installed if I was not careful about reading the fine print so to speak, which almost happened..... twice.

Hi Stuart,

I received the same Flash Update reminder about a week ago when I completed a download of the Firefox update 3.6.6.

It could be that the updating Firefox action somehow triggered a need to also update Adobe Flash Player from (9.0.124.0 in my case) to the 10.1.53.64 version listed in the Flash download screen.

Have you recently updated your Firefox version?

I've gone though the process again, and yes, there's a check box marked by default to install McAfee.

I know I was busy at the time, trying to do several things at once and returning to my PC every few minutes to click through to the next page, but it's rather worrying that I didn't notice this. I must be getting old or something :-(

I still can't work out why Adobe would want do it though.

Thanks,

Stuart

I think that is why you missed it, I mean why would you have expected adobe to install McAfee?

In all previous adobe updates I've never seen it.
