Softbox grid

Hi,

I'd like a grid for a ProFoto 3 x 4 softbox, but the price is prohibitive. I can see two options:

1) Buy a third party grid. Does anyone here know of more reasonable priced grids that fit ProFoto softboxes? I can't find any....

2) Make my own. In this case I'd be very grateful if some could send me some close up photos of a grid so that I can see how they are typically manufactured. I'd also like to know what thickness of webbbing is used, and the size of the squares.

Thanks for any help.

Me too

Tim,

I want to do the exact same thing. Not make my own, but I am looking at grids that would fit my profoto 3x4. You are talking about the soft egg crate style? I have a note on my to do list to call Chimera and ask them if their grids would fit. They are more reasonable and I think they might work. Westcott and maybe Photoflex might have some the right size too.

Editing to add this link...way less expensive:

Then I found this - half the price of the Westcott. . I like the Chimera brand of modifiers:

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the links, although I can't find the grids on the second one.

I finally came across all the info that I wanted from a company called Lighttools.

First off, here's the technical data on the square sizes etc:

http://www.lighttools.com/content/lighttools/CustomPages/technical_data.htm

I'd need 3cm squares, there's no way on Earth that I'm still going to make one!

However, Lighttools make grids for all the softbox manufacturers. For example, 40 degree grid for the Profoto 3 x 4, is $319 :

Much, much cheaper than the Profoto equivalent.

Received it!

I can't believe that my Grid came today. It's terrific - well made and nicely packaged. Now to shoot with it will have to take a few days. But I am impressed.
