Travelog: Somewhere between my back door and the laundry

'Go check the washing machine', Christine demands.
'Where did you say it was kept?,' I asked, despondently, and hoping from some guidance from above.
'Don't try to be smart, she retorted. 'You can try that stuff with your mates at OPF but it won't work with me.'
Mmmm. She's on to me. Should I feign ignorance or accept she has the upper hand?
I slid the door open and stepped out into a swarm of savage, blood-sucking mosquitoes. Ross River Fever was on the rise so I hastened my pace. I looked left to check the pool for crocs. They were also on the move with the increase in rain. I'd already fished out 3 cane toads and a water python this week. Swimming was becoming a dangerous passtime.
Although nothing moved I had a sense that I was at the helm of the Starship Enterprise heading to places no bloke had been. The last of the Sun's light had been absorbed by the purple darkness of the Universe. A faint glow of a distant planet filtered over the bow, Alpha Centauri or some such beconned me to warp. The engine room provided a warm light and a distant and comforting hum. The antenna remained my only connection with the world from which I had come. The deep pool before me cooled the fuel rods for the Hyperdrive. There were no need for instruments or a control; everything was controlled automatically - by my very thoughts. The mission was one which would take human kind on a new and exciting venture and I was the pioneer, chosen to save the human race from its finality.'

'Have you got that washing yet?'
Was that one of my thoughts or a communication from a Higher Authority.
'...and a cup of tea wouldn't go astray when you're done there.'
I switched the overdrive to idle and returned momentarily to Home through the transporter to deal with the Commander in Chief. The saving the planet would have to wait.
