Steam & Thesher Show

Just got back from an event that takes place each year, where old tractors and steams engines are exhibited. I found the grounds quite difficult to photograph - with tight spaces and busy confusing backgrounds with the masses of RVs parked in the same space as well as tons of hydro poles and hydro lines.

But I managed to do what I could to get some interesting shots. Here is a short set of black and whites. Photographed with Olympus E-PL1 and E-PL3 along with 14-42 kit lens and 40-150 lens:

Robert, these are wonderful. Your treatment of B&W is really great. Such wonderful complete tones throughout the range from black to white.

Rob,

All of the fellows are remarkable characters, however, this one, either is a genius at makeup or else has one of the most incredibly individual appearance I've seen! Remarkable, even without any machines!

He indeed was an interesting character. I noticed him long enough to get 2 shots off, as the tractor he was driving passed by in the parade at the end of the day.

The steam engines are so big and dark on the front end, that I couldn't really see what was coming up as I stood kind of in front of them looking down the narrow street. I was mostly paying attention to a specific section as they passed at the intersection hoping in front of a small log cabin - which was the only decent background.

At that position, that fellow glanced over my head at the crowds behind me, and I recognized that the face that I had zoomed in on, was going to be a doozer. Then he turned to look ahead and I took this much less uninteresting shot of him literally 2 seconds later (4:19:40PM for the character shot and 4:19:42PM for this one - how I love Exif, cause I didn't know until I looked).

While nothing special as a photograph, this actually was quite an amazing piece. The steam powered mini tractor travelled completely around the fairgrounds. The driver was constantly feeding wood into the small firebox, to power the engine. It kept up to the speed of the others.
