Mark Hampton: Stock clearance

Mark,

"Stock Clearance" is a remarkably apt title. After all the folk hear are not just waiting! Some are taking stock of their lives!

I am immediately drawn into the picture with it's cast of characters, some with introspective expressions, concentrating on something they have to deal with or can't! I have not observed such behavior in the street outside a store. I have discovered that folk get lost like this in airports and totally put down their social shields which normally suppress such outward signs of disquiet and turmoil.

That's what I see and then the others who are more lighthearted. Since the structure and cropping didn't impact on my experience, it must be pretty good as is! So are you going to find more like this, where a sign reflects on people's actions? That would make this one even more effective.

Asher - thanks for taking a look - and interest. I tend to makes this type of picture once and a while. Not as a conscious piece of work but more out of reflex – I like making pictures

As the political system over here gets worse I will no doubt be pulled into making more like this. The idea of cropping would have been to put the people in a pen – but I loved the expression of the people on the right so much I left them in.

Was this cropped? If so consider going back to your original again. I'd like some lead in to the words on the side of the taxi. Consider allocating different levels of light and contrast to the picture so it has more depth.

thanks for the feed back - cropping was done in camera - i toned the background down to flatten the image to give the image less space / to heighten a sense of claustrophobia - It’s an in-elegant solution - I will look out for the cab again – meantime I have taken the adjustment from the bottom of the taxi – cranked up the contrast and blurred the background.

I do like this better now. One suggestion here is to actually add a matt just off white to set this off so we have space before the wording as a lead in and the matt might do that.
