The black stump

" Beyond the black stump" is a wonderful Aussie expression meaning way out West of whoop whoop, or back of Bourke.... never mind.

I went to a place where they claimed to be the home of the black stump. I can't remember where it was but I knew it seemed like a likely place for it. There was fuk all there, except a sign saying 'Home of the Black Stump'.
Here in the NT its just 'long way'. Past that is 'past long way'.

I have never heard the term, but the charcoal stump is stark and a reminder that storing huge amounts of energy in wood is a fire about to break out.

It's really amazing that we manage not to burn everything to charcoal!

And here I was thinking it was just another black stump.
I'll take another look.
Yep, I was right the first time. Still a black stump.

Mind you, it could be a symbol of what is far away and remote in the Australian landscape. or representative of the wasteful and wanton destruction of the bush by indiscriminant fires, or the conservation of old forests by rejuvenating fires.

Nah, its a burnt log.

How are you, by the way, Andy? well, I hope.
