I followed a small part of the river by boat, by car, minimum on foot and maximum distances...

Far better in- flight service than on the other cattle runs.

The river winds its way through 6 countries and into the sea through Vietnam.

I have half a mind to go into Vietnam, then take a river boat back into Laos. Or into Thailand and back.
But that would cost me at least 2/3 days. Though I have no fixed schedule, I have to get back home. I have some important appointments to keep. And I am having a toothache!!

So we decide to forego this plan and just follow the river towards the Vietnam border..not all the way.

We start early, but not that early. The sun is up, but the far mountain ranges are shrouded in a dull haze.
We have to descend into the valley, then make our way up through treacherous winding roads that are just mud and gravel at places. And can easily get washed away during a torrential downpour.

But it is not the rainy season. We are on a steep descent as we head towards the mountain range towards your top right. No rain, but the mountains and trails do not disguise their jungles and undergrowth.

February..the dry season.

The river and its tributaries recede. The river banks have receded. But those that live near the river know that it is a false sense of security. Come the rainy season, their houses shall be washed away. They are prepared and ready.

The river that gives life; takes it away too. That has been the seasonal ritual. Dams, flood protection and construction to avert disasters has been undertaken as a matter of urgency..mostly with Chinese help.

While the river and its myriad of tributaries were calm during my visit..glimpses of the beauty and ferocity
of nature's power is on display in places...

The rocks you see here are way under water during the rains.

Fahim,

Are their white water rafting areas for the travelers and tourists? This would seem to have all the power one needs and the scenery too!

Indeed. There are many places for whitewater rafting and water sports. A few deaths have occurred along some of the rapids of tourists.

Best.

And where there are rivers, there usually is fish..loads and loads of it.

p1446649586-4.jpg

Rows and rows of stalls filled with fish..fresh, dried, fish paste and what have you.

For someone like me, with cholesterol and refraining from non-muslim meat products, this was simply wonderful.

As we descend from the mountains heading towards the river, one comes across one of the Unesco World
Heritage Sites in Laos.

The area around it is huge along with other ancient ruins. I hired a golf cart, since camels were not available as in Petra.

Wat Phu ( Vat Phu ). I might revisit this subject later on as I am a history buff.. But the interested reader might investigate which came first.. Wat Phu or Angor Wat near Seam Reap, in Cambodia.

Seam Reap is about 30 minutes by plane from here.

Along the river are numerous small markets. Where there is a market, there are people.

Where there are people, there are the little people. Afraid of strangers..rightfully so. Specially dark ones with long robes!

With that, it is time to bid farewell to the river and its surrounds. Till the next time.

Thank you for being with me; the Lao way. A mark of respect not of subjugation.

BTW I have a print I promised you, looking great, I made one for myself as well, I know you're travelling at the moment but can you PM me your address?

This is a great series, Fahim, and I agree with Charlotte. The first image is wonderful. It's like the plasticity of reality has changed and it's a cross between fog and a cave painting.

Ben, Robert, Murray..thank you for the kind words.

Isn't it wonderful that, as far as a simple photograph is concerned, all of us can have differing views and all be equally correct and valid!!.

Warmest regards to you all.
