In some states, veterinarians are not licensed to provide dental services to animals, only separately licensed veterinary dental professionals. In other states, veterinarians can provide dental services to animals, but other professionals (sometimes not needing to be licensed) can provide dental treatment to animals as well.

In Texas, the distinction between veterinarians and equine dental specialists is prominent.
