Each year (for the last 2 years) I have be documenting the work of a visiting volunteer dental team to Cambodia. Kids International Dental services offers free dental treatment to the poorest Kids in Phnom Penh and surrounding areas totalling over 1000 treatments in a 2 week period. These are just a few of the images I have taken.

Then they have a full check up by one of the Dentists

With so many KIDS to see waiting times can be long but measures are taken to keep them occupied as a number of the Volunteers are Teachers.

The conditions are pretty much like a MASH UNIT, trying to get the most done in the most efficient way.

After speaking to many of the Dentist who Volunteer to come on these mission, the common theme is that they find its a life changing experience, coming from their practices in the West (and East) with all the equipment and facilities to Cambodia where they have to rely on their own ingenuity and ability to be imaginative in the way the work is done.

Ian,

This represents a new start for a nation who's population was decimated by the Khmir Rouge in the Killling Fields of the madness of the late 20th Century, 1975-1979. Then, anyone educated or who wore glasses or who questioned was massacred with their family in remote fields of death. We in the West allowed this to happen, our hands so soiled from the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Today, robbed of generations of teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, nurses and the like, children, after a limited schooling, tend to migrate from villages to work on farms or else some unfortunates are trafficked to the sex trade of neighboring countries, sold off to help feed the other children. Outreach has helped thousands of children stay in school and pays a few dollars to the family to offset the economic loss. Today, many such children are graduating and reach university!

To see these well fed and groomed children with books is a delight. Your pictures show a glimpse of this rebirth of a nation and we're so grateful for your documentation.
