This has been one of those "if you don't laugh, you'll cry" weeks. My husband just spent 5 days in the hospital because of an incident that mimicked an MI and treatment resistant hypertension. I bought him a gift, here:

Rachel Ann Foster: Coping Mechanism

It's a red 21-speed Schwinn bicycle. I was intrigued by the pattern of the shadow made by the light falling on the front wheel. I haven't "gotten" what I'm looking for yet, but trying to get it is a nice distraction.

Oh, and my cat ran away tonight. Anyone interested in getting together a betting pool for when my dog dies?

Sometimes if you don't laugh, you'll cry. I choose laughter!

The image would be perfect if not for something by the tire on the edge of the photo that draws my eye to it and the far right side of the image a bright spot that draws my eye away....But thats me and only me no one else will see it that way...It is a well taken photo...Must be tri-pod...

Its in the country westerns where the dog dies or goes away....On the flip side its the helter skelter horror flicks where the cat is the one that runs away....Yikes...

Its the darker line in the floor by the tire on the outside edge of the picture...The floor is lighter in stain but then theres that dark section leading up to the dark tire...It runs them together sort of....Sorry...Not really relevant i'm sure...

Yup, I should have scrubbed the floor.

But for me there is far more wrong with it. Lighting, composition, all need work. Perhaps I should capture only the shadow. Maybe......

The shadow of the forks show two hands on a bar. That's what you are going through and this is your struggle. I wish you strength, courage and a strong arm to make your guy have a healthy lifestyle and not give you worry like this!

You have done the best thing! Provided the means and the encouragement to get on the right track. That's all we can do!

What a wonderful interpretation, Asher!

This is my coping mechanism: When I can't do anything about it, I get my camera and distract by trying to be creative. It's far better than moping or doing a drama queen thing.

Now about my darn cat....

Hi Rachel,
I do so hope your husband is doing better! I'm sorry to hear of his difficulties.
Your cat will come back, as they invariably do...and having just lost one of my two goldens I'm not going to bet on the passing of a pet. Bad karma.
The lemons you have been handed have produced a fine lemonade!
I envy your coping mechanism! These are very nice images.
Although I hope all turns out well I'd like to see more of your coping skills!

Thanks, John! I'm sorry to hear of the lost golden. They're wonderful creatures and it's astonishing how much a part of the family our pets become.

Asher, Sigmund Freud got a lot of things wrong, but one thing he got right: Sublimation is a wonderful defense mechanism. This was a very cathartic exercise for me. Thank you for allowing me to share it.

Hi Rachel

I'm glad your husband and cat are home. As for the hard drive, perhaps losing your past pictures could be a release. There are several comments on one of Mike Johnston's recent blog posts to this effect, though it is a good reason to have a family album for the important things in life:)

I liked the bike picture, by the way. One of your best recent pics I think.
