Hi, Dan,

Doesn't look like Windermere as I remember it (although it changed a lot when they tore down the car barns; still, for a while in the late 1950's, the rotary converter station was kept in use for trolley bus support).

Best regards,

Doug

Dan Siman: Windermere

Dan,

This is my first sight of the place! The dock seems interesting enough the sky is utterly forgettable until your rendering in B&W. Now we have drama! I like it!

What about the left side of the B&W presentation. Did you find that it has to be so dark and dull? It's obviously needed for the composition, but is there opportunity for any further improvement.

Oh, its the M.V Swan on that Windermere (not truly a mere, though).

I must have missed that.

She's as old as Carla and looks almost as good.

Best regards,

Doug

..........on that Windermere (not truly a mere, though).

A while ago I compiled a list of place name derivations in the Lake District, mostly based on a book by Robert Gambles.

Windermere = Old Norse Vinandar + Old English Mere. Vinandar is the genitive form of the O.N. personal name Vinandr, hence Vinandr's lake.
It was recorded in c. 1180 as Wynandrmer.

O.E. mere = sea or lake, related to Old Saxon meri, Old Norse marr, Old High German mari. Compare Latin mare. (source dictionary.reference.com)

Nice etymological background. Thanks.

My comment was based on a specific technical use of the term mere is used in hydrological science to mean a body of water whose breadth is much greater than its depth, in particular one that because of its proportions, and other surrounding conditional, does not (at least not consistently) maintain a thermocline (a thin band of depth in a body of water over which the temperature changes rapidly).

Evidently Windermere (the lake, not the rotary converter station) does exhibit a thermocline.

Best regards,

Doug

Hi, Stuart,
That's merely a pond.
Well done, you!

Perhaps like Martin Mere in Burscough, Lancashire, actually thought of as a marsh. It is said that until it was drained (a matter not readily accomplished), it was the largest body of fresh water in England.

But we know that ponds can be quite large. At one time, with respect to the US, it was said that England was across one!

There is some thought that the identification of Lancelot as Lancelot du Lac (Lancelot of the Lake) was a reference to Martin Mere.

Best regards,

Doug

Dan,

I wonder whether one can get that dramatic sky in wonderful color version too? Maybe you could blend back the sky of the B&W version into the original?
