Wood Ducks in the Shade

Eric Diller

New member
Found these 2 Wood Ducks hiding in the shade along the Lakes edge.

Wood Ducks have some wild colors and capturing them in the shade is tough.

No flash used (hate it with wildlife) Used a Nikkor 200-400MM F4, ED,IF,VR lens with 1.4x t.c.

Eric,

Is the pattern on the side the feathers or moiré?

Asher

I don't think Asher's referring to the stippled lighting, but to the fine lines. It's a pattern, not moiré.

It is notable, by the way, that moiré is often visible in bird feathers. To be clear, I don't mean in a photo, I mean in the actual scene, visible with your naked eye. Just like the way you can see moiré patterns when you look through one screen door at another screen door, you can similarly often see moiré when you look through one layer of feathers at another layer of feathers.

However, what you're seeing here is the feather pattern wood ducks have, not moiré.

Great sharpness, detail and colors, Eric.

While I share your dislike of using flash with wildlife in general, I think there are some circumstances where judicious use of fill-flash (Flash EV down anywhere from -1 to -2 EV) is beneficial (especially if it's not looking directly at you, where all kinds of odd eye-reflexes can result).

The darks in this duck's feathers are so deep that I don't think Shadows/Highlights tool will accomplish much besides adding noise. So if there is time and opportunity, I'd suggest taking some shots with and some shots without flash, and deal with them later to see what does or doesn't work.

Superb action in the flight shot!
