one is tempted tho think that the lower edge of the bright area is the horizon at sunset, and that we see perhaps a grass fire below.

But in fact that "grass fire" is the setting sun, just barely visible over the the San Andreas mountains, about 50 miles southwest from here. The light area is in fact clouds, still illuminated "from below" by the sun even as it sets, and the straight lower edge is in fact just the edge of a cloud bank.

We think.
