Hard facts we are learning on the young!

51% of the hospitalizations in New York, are young people 21-40.

This has shocked the US Surgeon General? Does it merely represent the laisser faire attitudes of young folk as being invincible!

Need more numbers here!

What about in other places? Are the young being increasingly infected?

This is unusual and has not been reported in China or Italy.

A likely explanation is comorbidity with previous conditions like diabetes, smoking or medications.

Unlikely to be diabetes smoking or meds as the health authorities would have surely recognized that immediately!

Perhaps it’s results of stressing vulnerability of just the elderly!

They might think they are relatively invincible!

Remember that here,

  • tens of thousands of students, (on spring break), socialized too much in Florida and elsewhere,
  • students are much of the thousands of waiters in restaurants, (at east until last week), or food delivery!
So perhaps they have had far more social contact than the rest of us?

Maybe we check the data before we try to build a theory to explain it. Here: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6912e2.htm it says: "Among 508 (12%) patients known to have been hospitalized, (...) 20% were aged 20–44 years."

As to the idea that authorities would recognise the effect of medications, I'll cite this document: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30116-8/fulltext (already cited in another thread) "treatment was not assessed in either study".

Then Jérôme, look at this

“COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has been much deadlier in older people, but more anecdotes are popping up of young, healthy people getting critically ill.

Among the first reported cases in the US, around 40 percent of the patients that required hospitalization were between the ages of 20 and 54,

according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” The link you have already
