In My Yard

I came home the other evening to find a wild turkey in the yard. I chased him around trying to get a sharp MF shot at him. Not sure I entirely succeeded. Canon 1D Mk II N + Super Takumar 300mm f/4, 1/400 @ f/5.6, ISO 400.

Steve,

This is impressive. I guess it's hand held. When you say he's a wild turkey, tell me, how high is your fence? Is the guy free to go? What distance was it? Also what ground glass do you have, a split screen?

I also have a few Takamurs, I have to check them out!

Hi Asher. I would guess the fence is about 3 1/2 ft high and ol' Tom probably stretched hisself to 4 ft or thereabouts. Tom just flutters into the yard on occasion as he makes the rounds of the neighborhood. I guess they can fly up to about 20 ft. The minimum focusing distance on the Super Tak is 5.5m/18 ft so I was about 25 ft away. Much closer and I probably would've spooked him. I do have a split focus screen but it sometimes goes black in one half. Also I was focusing at f/5.6 because switching between Auto and Manual to get the brighter screen was taking too long to capture the action. I just need to keep working at it. Renting an EF 400mm f/5.6L hasn't helped either. 8~D

Oh, it's a great thing to have. It's got to be one of Canon's faster focusing lenses and it's great for wildlife and birds. It's just that when I go back to the Super Tak and its 270° focus throw that I slow down so much that it's hard for me to keep up.

This looks pretty sharp to me, so looks like you've done well. Great poses as well.

Composition looks perhaps a bit tight; might like a little more room, but does work as is. Also, to my eye, it seems to have the White Balance a bit on the cool side, which as I've noted before, is where Canon's AutoWB tends to err in many situations.
