Yellow Rose- night shot

I had to use a high iso for this shot due to being a little breezy and shot it during a break in the breeze.
lighting was done by a white led flashlight overhead

iso 800
50mm
f/16
1/5 sec

Cody,

Was this a tripod setup?

I understand how you could love the subject. I do too. The choice of 1/5 sec even when the wind is down is puzzling. That's not a good set up for getting sharp pictures. The aperture of f 16 is worth considering too. Unless one is working with a MF, large format camera or have special DOF needs, avoid such a small aperture for modern sensors, especially if you need light for the exposure. There are several reasons. First at such tiny apertures, the quality of the image is degraded by interference with the edge of the aperture. The light, as a wave front, is perturbed and ripples of disturbance impair the clear image that the lens would otherwise throw on the film or sensor. The other point is that one needs a certain amount of light to properly record an image. In this case, one could get the same amount of light with f5.6 and 1/20 sec and get a far sharper image. Many lenses are the sharpest closed down a few stops and don't get better by closing the aperture.

Cody,

This picture is illuminated in a special way, light from a flashlight. not having light coming from all around means that we only see petal from light reflected. In daylight, there's also a component of transmitted light as the petals are, impart, translucent. So this way of lighting makes leaves more solid.

So with the dark background the flower and leaves are given a dramatic edge and it stands out well. I have never shot a flower like this. It is interesting as it shows the flower in a new way.

Cody,

Looking at your pictures in Photoshop, there's a lot more detail and information. I now understand more of the picture except the camera and lens used!

I hope you don't mind, but I used shadow and highlight corrections on your posted jpg and a tiny S curve and selective sharpening to give the following

Cody White: Yellow Rose - Night Shot

Edited ADK

This shows what a lot of detail there is to be had and putting this effort into a RAW file and dealing with noise would yield a delightful picture. So your lighting worked handsomely despite being so modest! I do hope you like the possibilities shown here.

..the spiders that eat the males, the queen chased in the air by the a cloud of males, the winner rewarded with death as his entire pumping genitalia are ripped away as the queen flies off with her prize!

but is that really the mood you want Cody, morbid beauty? I think not!
