St Bees

The coast-line and St. Bees (see $$ below) taken from the road leading down to the village. The cliffs (sandstone) are the only ones on the coast between Wales and Scotland.

Canon 50D, 70-200 f/4 IS @ 80mm, f8. 11 portrait shots stitched with PTGui. Full size panorama 20,887 x 4,442, 16-bit TIFF 543 Mb.

Here's a pathetically small version. Click on it for a larger one (10,000 x 2127) to see sheep, cows, walkers, golfers and goal-posts. Beware, large file, 6.3 Mb.

Regards,

Stuart

The name St Bees is a corruption of the Norse name for the village, which is given in the earliest charter of the Priory as "Kyrkeby becok", which can be translated as the "Church town of Bega", relating to the local Saint Bega. She was said to be an Irish princess who fled across the Irish Sea to St Bees to avoid an enforced marriage. Carved stones in the parish churchyard testify that Irish-Norse Vikings settled here in the 10th century.

Hi Stuart,
What a great pano!
Yes, you must see the full-sized version to appreciate all the details.
And that's what totally bowled me over! Such details!

Hi Stuart,

I love panoramas. You have some nice surroundings to shoot, they lend themselves for Panos very well. I'd try and reduce the curved horizon if possible, by lowering the final pitch angle.

Cheers,
Bart

beautiful panorama

hello :)

indeed a beautiful place filled with life - kindly thank you for sharing it

about the curved horizon, it is a minus you can fix by adding verticals wherever you can and a horizontal line to make it straight;

also I get the feeling it is somehow over-sharp; the 70-200 is famous for its pleasant sharpness; in spite of that the gulf course, the animals on the far hill and the village in the right would certainly deserve a more detailed presence in your inspiring panorama

Hi Stuart,

It's a lovely pano, thanks for sharing. I too agree with the comments by Bart and Valentin re. the horizon. But it is not a showstopper :).

Cheers,

Over-sharpness!

This issue, Valentin, of distribution of sharpness, is an interesting part of composition. Less in as many places as possible is often more effective!

No doubt Stuart will have to print it out to finally decide.

Many thanks to all those who have shown interest. It's much appreciated.

What I like about big panoramas is the ability to peer into a small, uninteresting image and see new layers of activity revealed.

I've taken on board the criticism about the horizon, and Cedric will be pleased to hear that the village has been saved from the tsunami. Unfortunately doing so has created a few more minor distortions, so there's still some work to be done.

WRT sharpening, I did none, except for a touch of Focus Magic at 1px blur width. The apparent over-sharpening may be a result of using Raw Shooter, which can be a bit over zealous with detail extraction.

Regards,

Stuart
