Red Fox

Red fox playing peek-a-boo. This fox had traveled the length of the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone NP before having lunch on the elk carcass. Lacking a 1200mm f/2.8 with a 2x TC, this is the center crop from the image. Canon 1D Mk II N, Sigma 100-300 f/4, 420mm, 1/2000 @ f/5.6, ISO 400, + 1 1/3 EV.

Nice, Steve! Great pose and expression. I like the contrast of the fox's colors with the foreground and background whiteness. I might consider cropping a bit off the bottom and see how that looks.

Nice job!

Great shot Steve.
Well worth the time taken to capture.
I love the wildlife experts we've got around here.
What a beautiful beasty.

The expression for me is more like a De Niroesque "You lookin' at me?"

Don,

It's great to hear cropping ideas as it opens up new possible ideas. Just the darker area. Then the fox emerges from the whiteness beautifully.

Great idea!

Thanks for the comments. I adjusted the composition to remove some of the snow on the bottom. Here's a situation where some of that expensive (and very heavy) glass would have come in handy. This is pretty close to 100% and unfortunately I don't think it will print well. :~(

Hey Steve,

That is a more severe crop than what I was visualizing, in that you also took a lot from the left side of the frame, but I think it works very well, and improves the image's impact quite a bit. You end up with a very nice glimpse into the world of the fox, as he appears to be trying to get a glimpse into yours!
