Just for Fun No C&C will be given: Helicopter

So last week there was a grass fire that ate up 50 acres in Brooklyn Park, Mn.

I was working but got out during lunch to try and get a few grabs of the helicopters picking up water to keep the blaze in check. I missed a few opportunities to get the planes that drop water too.

Here is one taken with the tokina 100mm macro. I have a few taken with a wider focal length I still need to work on at home.

Jake,

At first I thought this was a toy! Interesting that one can get a different frame according to what one has recently seen. These are pretty impressive when there's a drop. What amazes me is that there's such a shortage of giant planes to put out fires when the forests catch fire.

I'd be worried flying a helicopter over a fire. Doesn't take much to being them down!

Fun photo, Jake. I see the rotor is "frozen" so conditions included full sunlight, evidently.

The situation reminded me of an outing almost ten years ago when a friend and I were photographing birds way out in the middle of nowhere. A helicopter, inspecting lines along a power corridor, appeared above our location. We both swung our camo-covered 600mm f/4 lenses in its direction for a possible photo just in time to see the pilot's shocked reaction to having what must have appeared to be rocket launchers aimed at him. She and I both quickly pointed our lenses downward waved in as friendly a manner as possible.

Nice! Yeah, i rushed over to where I thought the heli's were picking up water to get a couple snaps. I quickly changed from my 100mm to my 35mm to get a better view. At least I caught some rotor motion in the exposures with the 35mm as I adjusted a bit for it after seeing there was none with the 100mm.
