Oxen and Plow

Driving through Honduras today, I had my camera to the window ---- and good thing I did.

Something you don't see every day is a farmer walking behind two oxen, plowing a single furrow on a dried up field. I had my camera set to Shutter Speed Priority at a fast shutter speed and Auto ISO.

I got off one shot and the second shot was on the other side of the tree and then the scene was gone. I would have loved to stop and spend time - but the bus was on the move getting me to El Salvador.

This raw image has a special value in being the unvarnished truth about scratching one's living by the seat of one's brow. Most of us have totally lost connection with the earth that supports growth of the seeds that the plough is opening up to receive them. I do not fear that this way of life is vanishing. It's tragic but the life is very hard. When tractors come, sadly he could lose his land and have no job at all!

That was indeed a benefit of being prepared. All those discussions on the best camera for the job don't amount to beans if one is not able to respond to the opportunity at an instant. Was your bus just moving off, or was this just a random sighting as you were speeding along?

Thanks Asher. It is a public bus that moves people internationally. Like a Greyhound Bus, it was booting along at normal highway speed, totally oblivious to anything I was doing. As well, the black tinted windows were sealed shut to provide air conditioning. This resulted in around a 2 stop reduction on light, making it a challenge to shoot with the high shutter speeds I was needing. I had no idea this scene was coming up, until it was directly beside me. Small pockets opened up now and then, and I would shoot. I attempted many shots this way, and came away with 2 really got images. Under the circumstances, I'm happy. Up until this point, it looked like it wasn't working. I knew I had it as soon as I fired.

Great capture Rob. It must have been a very interesting bus trip.
