Denial! A characteristics of our species!

Asher Kelman

From before the ancient pharaoh's made pyramids to deny the finality of death, hominids have had that basic human characteristic!

Faced with something we don't like, we invent alternative scenarios to explain facts we confront or just plain deny and ignore reality.

We all know about deniers of climate change.

Here is a fellow calmy mowing the lawn, ignoring the obvious tornado and the please of his family!

Go figure stubborn man!

Hello Asher

They say we can predict the weather but in reality they can't.

Actually, we are pretty good at interpreting the weather over a several week period. Our weather forecasts here are pretty accurate, +/- a degree or so!

Hi Asher

Several weeks? You must have some awesome weather people in California! I spent last winter in the northern part of Canada and the weather predictions were unreliable from day to day never mind several weeks or years out into the future.

Man has been trying to dominate the earth since Christ was a cowboy. But Mother Nature doesn't care about exaggerated predictions or the accuracy of them.

Best, regards

The computer software has sets of deliverables. These are intended for certain sets of stakeholders: dense poulations areas, military activity zones, planned special ops combat zones, industrial scale farms and the like. The accuracy drops off for less populated regions where stakeholders are less "important".

However, if we were going to invade Northern Canada, both the Canadians and the USA would have pretty accurate ideas on the weather conditions there. Of that I am certain!

Oh yes of course the elite schizophrenic bureaucrats have all of the magical toys!! If it were not for the weather 9 out of 10 people wouldn't have anything to talk about but the beauty of the weather is that at least it changes. Do they have a plan to evacuate the penguins if need be? LOL!

Depends who sponsors them, Coca Cola or Burger King!

At least that guy got his garden mowed. This 'Queen' denies denial.

Because of the rotation of our planet, dominant wind are from the west. Because oceans do not have features like mountain and valleys, predicting the development of the weather over oceans is comparatively easy. It follows that weather forecasts are usually more accurate on the west coasts of major continents than in inland mountainous areas.

If you are interested in understanding global weather patterns, the following site is a wonderful visualisation:

https://earth.nullschool.net

It helps to click the bottom left menu, to be able to see air conditions at different altitudes, sea currents, pollutions and more. Leaving the mouse cursor on a symbol will explain its meaning.

Hello Jerome

Thank you for this explanation! I will research further. I live near the ocean on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the predictions change from day to day just like the weather.
I went out in the field the other day with some co-workers to look at the overall scope of a project. I complained about the fact that it was raining and remarked that they should have planned this for on a sunny day but they assured me that it wasn't supposed to rain that day. They say that we can predict the weather but in reality they can't. This is typical and not an unusual scenario.

Here in Southern California, outdoors life is an expected treat, summer winter. We rely on the forecasters for our social planning. Even wedding planners take the forecasts seriously as they are most often correct.

So it comes as a surprise that folk up in Western Canada don't get the same service!

When we are challenged with facts we seek to deny, we can switch the subject by the "launch phrase", "on the other hand", and thus change the subject!

We justify falsehood by pushing attention to some unrelated alternative meme!

No system can predict future events that is a fact. Of course it would be safe to assume that traffic will be busy during the rush hour come Monday morning based on past events. Special interest groups get paid to push all kinds of impractical agendas based on propaganda and junk science. People are fooled into believing all kinds of silly things. Weather forecast models are not something that one can rely upon simply because the are inaccurate.

I am not much concerned with the accuracy of weather forecasts as here they are accurate 99% of the time. We have a huge set of observations over the adjacent Pacific Ocean and good science and experience for modeling the consequence of the arrival of a new weather front.

My concern in denial is greatest for those who ignore and turn their backs the knowledge base

* of the fossil record of the origins of man, way before the 5,000 years of bible stories,

* the facts of consequences of polluting our natural resources

* claims that no matter what we do to this planet, we have a divine force to always rescue us from our folly!

.....also tribalists like Theresa May, who feel that after all the lessons ofEuropean conflict and obvious success of a larger integrated market, deny reality and think they can survive best on their own!

With such denials so common, we're destined for the same oblivion that be fled the mighty dinosaurs!

Come on Asher your assertion that weather reports are accurate 99% of the time is complete B.S period. We measure climate with cold hard cash! Free market systems solve problems not a bunch of Eco wieners jumping up and down demanding change right now!!! Who is to say that localized economies won't be the way of the future?

Localized primitive economies work as they are self-sustaining, not complex rare-resource dependent post industrial economies like the U.K.

Scant evidence for that, James, except as a simplistic and common conservative meme.

I could just convincingly quip "Societies collapse when the people will no longer support the privileged elites!"

However studied cases show the collapse of societies is far more complex, including hostile neighbors, depletion of resources, unforgiving climate and much more!

I don't accuse you of fact denial here, as collapse of societies are multifactorial and so different in many cases. Still, be aware that Rome was actually sacked by Barbarians! Only if someone denies that could One take umbridge. If not for destruction by the Barbarians, Rome might have, (likely as not), been able to gradually accommodate to everything else.

Read my link above, the collapse of societies and also this!

Hi Asher

According to the following link "excessive government killed Ancient Rome" and it also supports my previous claim. The first link above seems more like conjecture that supports a narrative rather than science. I will follow up on the other link later.

James,

The Cato Institute? You have to be really joking! It would be like using the Vatican as a source for birth control info!

"The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank founded by Charles G. Koch and funded by the Koch brothers. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Institute states that it favors policies "that are consistent with the traditional American principles of limited government, individual liberty, and peace."[1] Cato scholars conduct policy research on a broad range of public policy issues and produce books, studies, op-eds, and blog posts. They are also frequent guests in the media.

The Cato Institute is an "associate" member of the State Policy Network, a web of right-wing “think tanks” in every state across the country.[2] They are also part of the international Atlas Group network with links to the Institute for Humane Studies. The Independent Institute seems to operate as a Cato subsidiary.

Where ideology and science part company, Cato favors ideology, as shown by an advertisement[3] published in newspapers in 2009 disputing the state of the science on climate change.[4]"

Hi Asher

Regardless, it does show ample proof of over taxation and excess burden on the common folk who simply walked away from their land. Oh yes the debasement of the money was another interesting scenario. We live in a debt based society where people are over burdened with debt and taxes so if you want to talk about denial you should first look at your own economy. I would suggest to you that the collapse of currency will happen long before any of the outrageous claims that the guacamole dips and salad heads of the world like to promote.

Such as the "Planetary Emergency" and "Environmental Armageddon"."Using the science of fear teaches people what to think, not how to think". It is a means to advocate a desired outcome rather than to motivate creative problem solving. So where do all the leftists get there info from? The television or the radio?

We can sum up the Cato institute by the simple phrase, "science denial"! It is a waste of time to read their political papers.

The Koch brother finance their nonsense! There is nothing they write that is worth reading, except to study the financing of the delusions of the right and far right in the USA.
