Most often I imagine the metaphor in a long curved road.

Here we have ocean on one side and a barbed wire fence on the other, ominous clouds and a straight open road but with skid marks and a warning sign!

What function does this fence serve?

In the grand metaphor, we can imagine all obstacles and diversions. So a fence, a broken or washed away bridge or barricade can challenge us.

We might choose a different branch in the road, or build a way of overcoming the obstruction.

The fence is just one example of many possible modulations with our free choice!
