Does one occasionally see genuine geisha girls in such outfits these days, or all that has passed?

those are pretty modern designs. pretty specific for entertainers to be eye catching. a Geisha is an entertainer, but they hold up a long history of traditional arts. the clothing and persona is as much a part of that tradition. that is from footwear to headpiece. that is when they are working and at what level they are.

there are more than a few types of kimono.
i knew a family in Sapporo with 2 daughters and a son. i have photographs of both of the daughters in their kimonos for their 20 birthdays. in Japan that is when they officially become adults.
the image below is of the older daughters outer garment. there is a name for every part of one.
