It's a hand applied emulsion. I could make a frame and have clean borders but I find I like the irregularity of the brush strokes.

These are all fabulous.
But I think the hand-painted black surround is a self-inflicted injury.

When seen on the full size of the paper, the brush marks add to the image much the same way Van Gogh used a large palette knife in Starry Night to accentuate the movement of the night sky.
