Ok
bad score for the French!
But the competition is not won yet for the Dutch team, it's only the first round! (though french are certainly over now) good luck to the players in orange for the next round!

Congrats, Cem

the NL did very well, and are amongst the 2 - 3 favorites, now.
They have the most enthousistic fans, this year.

In a week, they will play the quarterfinal, here in Basel.... oranje, oranje ;-)

Thanks Michael,

I heard that there are some 100,000 Oranje fans in Bern ATM.

For those who did not follow this, here is a short summary.

We have the elimination rounds of the European Footbal Championship right now. There are 4 groups of 4 teams each, and each team plays against the other three. In the end, the strongest 2 teams go to the quarter finals. The Dutch team is in the same group with Italy (the reigning World Champion) and France (the reigning vice World Champion) and Romenia. So this group has been called the "the death group" for Dutch. They were the underdogs and everbody including the Dutch thought that they'd be beaten by the Italians and the French. Against all odds, the Dutch have won the first game against Italy, the World Champion, by 3-0! It was their first win against Italy in 30 years. And yesterday 4-1 against France!!! We are flabbergasted over here ;-)))

LOL. Don't want to rub anything in but Turkey has beaten them 2-1 the other day ;-))))

Cheers,

PS: I don't normally like or watch footbal but the whole country over here is talking about only football ATM. So one cannot avoid football unless one leaves the continent.

To my French brothers across 'the sock', I wish you to know that I too feel your pain. I had selected France in my office sweepstake.

Should've gone with Croatia or Germany [I don't know zip about football but my guess over the match between those two is that Master Jogi let'em play that way on purpose].

Anybody an explanation about our Mediterranean's mediocre playing; are they too much into their respective cuisines?

Too bad Netherlands, Russia showed you how to play today. Germany looked good in the last game and have what should be an easy passage in the next round. The Spain-Italy game should be great: I'm rootin' for Spain but fancy Italy. My guess is a Germany-Italy final but I'd love to see Russia (as underdogs) progress and win the tournament.
Cheers

Wasn't much of a match, Cem, was it? So, if Spain kicks out Italy, Germany is the last top team left, isn't it?
Yes, absolutely right. The game was, from the Dutch perspective, simply awful. This was the usually incapable Dutch team which we were used to seeing in the past ten years or so.

Gary Lineker has once famously stated that: "Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win." I guess that's what will happen in this tournament too ;-). Good luck to the Mannschaft, I hope that they'll win.

Hi Mike,

Since the Russian coach is a very popular Dutch guy (Guus Hiddink), I presume that the Dutch will now forget the fact that he has been a traitor to his country yesterday (in eliminating the Dutch) and start supporting the Russian team as their underdog favorite.

With Roman, my 6 year old son, I have been yesterday, prior to the game, in two of the fan-aerea's:

the holland-fans, 180'000 are the most sympatico ones! It's sad not having' em here anymore.
As it was very hot (wheater) the firebrigade had to spray water over them; but still some had problem with the circulation - probably caused by the game and alcohol (>500’000 Liter beer!!), too.

Hi Cem

Hiddink organized his team brilliantly, didn't he. The Dutch have much to be proud of despite the disappointment - they were the most attractive team in the tournament until that game. Apparently Russia is going to offer him honorary citizenship. I wish my native country could produce a coach a quarter as good.

Cheers
Mike

With my non-knowledge of football a prediction I made - in this thread I posed it as a question - became true: Apart from Germany all favourites have been beaten. If there would be any meaning to statistics in sports, I'd say the Germnan team should be very, very careful ...
