The Original Pantry - Los Angeles

Gary Ayala

New member
A somewhat well known and peculiar restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. The Pantry is opened 24/7, menus are written on the walls, serves a meat and potatoes fare and most meals are delivered on multiple plates. Example: The ham steak breakfast - The ham hangs over one plate, the harsh browns another the eggs on a third and the toast (1.5" thick sourdough) a fourth.

During daylight hours there always seems to be a line out the door and down the block ... while in line this day I stayed my boredom by taking some snaps.

And you thought I was lost in Nevada. Their pot roast is worth a 750 mile round trip. Well, not quite at $4.57 a gallon.

Mine is better. But their breakfasts are terrific. Owned by former LA Mayor Richard Riordan.

Forgot about the Pantry. Good to take out of towners for a Taste of Los Angeles.

Gary - nice captures. Like the tones. Too bad no patio for Terriers.

Yep, that's the Pantry. Unfortunately they'd upped the ante not quite the hardy meal for a fair price as it used to be.

I am getting a kick out of the reflections in 2 & 3, they sneak up on you. Looks like a happy crowd overall. There seems to be a 3D appeal to the left side of #4, maybe it is the brighter light.
Thanks for sharing, I'll have to check the place out some day.

You're right those windows seem to be floating in mid air. 9th and Figueroa, take cash because the Pantry doesn't accept CCs and don't forget your camera.

Love the street lights in Eddie Murphy's nose!

Haven't eaten at the Original Pantry Cafe in 30 years. But it seems like it hasn't changed a bit. The original carnivore's delight.

Hi Gary,

I am simply in awe. The 2nd and the 3rd ones are very good pictures. What a smile that guy has on the 3rd! I also like the creative angle on the EM picture, quite a nice capture. :)

Thanks for showing.

Cheers,

Gary,

I really like the monochrome picture of the chef with the pile of plates and the mound of fish on ice? The lack of color is so effective in taking away the alternate paths that the mind gets sidetracked to with our impulse to be distracted by colors.

This picture therefore has more ambience than the others. It's about the Chef and his workload.
