Howdy

I am pleased to be a new member and I really enjoy the honesty and ,frankly, kindness of the site vibe. This is the first forum I have ever joined and look forward to the experience.
I am an 'old guy" (58) and have been immersing myself into the study of photography for the past 2 years, in the few hours of spare I have;I work as an emergency doc. I started my digital camera experience 2 yrs ago when I was given a Canon 30D and since then I had purchased a few very good lenses and have really enjoyed the camera. I have read alot of books and articles, most of which have been very helpful. I try to shoot at least weekly and am still learning about Lightroom 2. About 5 months I became a Mac Pro guy and again more challenges and much time learning the unfamiliar OS platform: it's getting better! Also about months ago I purchased a Leica M8 rangefinder and one lens (expensive!) and that whole experience has been alittle challenging also, but has open my eyes to new opportunities.

I sometimes feel I spend more time reading than shooting but i feel I need a strong foundation for the understanding and developing a solid workflow and technical aspects of the digital world, which frankly seems alittle like magic to me.

Well, there it is in a medium nutshell. I will probably never be this wordy again but I kind of enjoyed it. Thanks again.

Curtis,

Delighted to have you join us. Hope you are still using your 30 D. The Leica however is a very special and intimate camera. It's really very simple and allows a lower profile relationship between the photographer and people who might notice us.

We'd be so pleased to see your photographs. Don't worry about what's missing in them. You'll get helpful feedback and besides, I'm sure some of your work will inspire others to do even better themselves.

Don't do much more thinking. We never reach perfection and if we did there would be no point in art, beauty and no hope for anything more. There always will be accidents. We just want to try and preserve the great impressions, those visions our minds create of what's around us. That way, despite the rareness of beauty, we can look at it any time we choose and get another dose of fulfillment and aesthetic joy that comes from viewing a great photograph. It's that kind of image we want to make, the kind that we'll treasure or others will value enough to want, chose and even need.

Again, welcome! Jump in and let's see what you have!

Welcome, Curtis! I have not been here long myself but have found the OPF to be my favorite (and only) photography discussion board.

Congratulations on the M8- I've been thinking about one but I just added the Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VR to my D700 arsenal so any Leica acquisition is definitely on the back-burner for some time to come. Looking forward to seeing your images.

Welcome Curtis!

I'm always glad to welcome another "new" member. Being one myself, I get to say how much I enjoy this forum (and I say that quite often!).
You'll find the comments and critiques well meaning and constructive. They're never harsh, they're never judgemental. They will range from quick notes expressing pleasure with your images to eloquent essays from Asher. I always amazed he finds the time to respond to so many with such detail and insight!
One note of caution - I wouldn't advertize the ER doc thing. Someone's bound to start a forum category that's filled with images of members with their tongues sticking out, all seeking image and medical analysis!
Post often! Let's see some of your images!
