In Perspective, Planet: A warm nest to raise the kids in

This is the nest of a Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) with 3 chicks hiding under their mom. It is located in a very good neighborhood as can be seen. As a matter of fact, it is at one corner of the famous pond in front of the Dutch Parliament in The Hague ;-).

Cheers,

Gross!! What a travesty!!

I'd love to see some shots of the chicks in the clear, if/when they make it possible. Their colors are such a contrast to the drab black/white of the adult!

Hi Don,

I was there only for a day's visit so it's a pity but I won't get another chance at photographing those chicks. As you said, their colors form a great contrast. Maybe I can find another nest elsewhere... :)

Cheers,

PS: To be fair to the keepers of the pond, it is very clean in general. Only this corner collects all the garbage swept by the wind and that is just where the nest is. But as Nicolas said also, this is a human problem and it is indeed a travesty.

Hi Don,

Gross indeed! But then the chicks are butt ugly as well ...

I posted an example some time ago in this thread.

Interesting birds with their sponge like looking bluish clowns feet, and severely territorial as well.

This reminds me of the shot I got of the blue heron with fishing line in his (her?) chest. Very poignant statement indeed, this image.
