Light bulbs exploding

Just wondering how all of you feel about this one.

Aperture f/4.5
exposure 1/1000sec
ISO-1600

no flash
cross lighted with 2 250 watt work lights.

Cody,

I am especially pleased that you demonstrate an example of getting a technically impressive moment without use of expensive gear. The work lights are very handy and practical. For models it's too much heat for a long session.

Thanks,

I just wish I didn't have to shoot is such a high ISO.
I tried shooting in an ISO of 800 but they turned out too dark.

I suspected the high ISO! Sometimes you just have to go high and live with grainy to get the shot. Sometimes, grainy even makes it work better.

It must be a real challenge to press the shutter release at exactly the right time.

It is a very hard challenge to get them all right.
I will start a new thread later today or tomorrow to show all my missed or early shots

Ok, so here a few missed attempets.
So please don't worry about the exif data for the missed ones.
trying to break a light bulb on top of another.

Second attempt must be older glass just bounced off of each other.

Back to the hammer shot too early

and the Exif data for this shot

Hi Cody,

I spent most of a day trying to get a good shot of a bursting balloon. The best I managed before I ran out of subject material was a blurred rag of rubber exiting stage right, so well done.

On the subject of high ISO, the images aren't particularly sharp in the first place, so have you tried something like Noise Ninja or Neat Image to smooth out the grain?

Regards,

Stuart

Hi Cody,

Hope you don't mind, but here's an edit. Adjusted shadows and highlights, a bit of Noise Ninja, and used Focus Magic to remove some of the vertical motion blur. WDYT?

I looks better, but it also took out the detail in the towel I was using under the hammer, and it also took out quite a bit of the white powder they use for the white coating of the glass.

And thank you.

The Lord giveth and The Lord taketh away :)

If the main objective is the exploding light bulb, then the towel is a minor player. In fact you could crop it out completely.

Ah, Cody, if only you had a 5d MkII! You can shoot up to 3200 ISO with minimal noise, and even 6400 looks good!

So speaks a proud owner of the Wonder Canon!

I shot that at 1/1000 shutter speed, I guess I will have to try to up it higher maybe 1/1250 or even 1/2000

Even faster, wide open (you don't need DOF here)…
use a third lamp if you need more light!

............and for your entertainment!

I would like to have one some day. You don't happen to have an extra one lying around that's not needed do you?

Cody,

Actually I was more impressed by the following, (as edited by Stuart, forgiving him for the lost white powder and towel). It's so clean and definite.

So Cody, with you new version, if you like it better, great!

Bingo, I think I got the shot I was going after.
Lens 50 mm macro
Shutter 1/4000 sec.
Aperure F/3.2
ISO-1600

Now, don't you want to now add in the rest of the hammer, powder and towel from one of the other shots?
