One is very important to me while the other I wish was less important.

I must say that I'm immediately taken by the idea behind these pictures and the way you are approaching the execution. You have two symbols that deal with time. A worn bible and an old wrist watch. Both belonged to a former generation.

So we have at least some fine building blocks that would give meaning. As you you have not provided a title a there are endles possibilities for what is being expressed. Since the is no obvious definite meaning and no clear narrative, we are forced to rely on initial impact of the subject matter then the composition to give value to the pictures.

I have to look at them some more. It would be great to know about this work. Is it past and complete or something still accessible and that you want to work on. If the latter is true this belongs in "Riskit!

So that's where I'll move it just for now. Otherwise, "Still Picture" would be best.

If it's a work you are still involved with, you have hooked me!

Minde, pray tell us some more. I am curious to know more about the Bible especially. Which edition. from where, what time period are we looking at and why it is important to you ( besides the obvious and undoubted religious significance of it ). Who are the printers?

As to the watch, where was it made, when and by whom?

I look forward to your work in this field.

Best.

Thanks for your replys! Asher, thank you for moving these to the right spot. I was thinking riskit but wasn't sure. Well I will tell you how I got this Idea. I was looking at a photography forum that has "assignments." ( I didn't participate in this assignment at the time.) The assignment for that week was Wisdom. Wow what a powerfull subject! I had to really think about that for a good long while. I of course am a Christian, and the very first thing I think of for wisdom is God. With that comes time. Thus the old Bible and the watch. Wisdom comes with time no matter who or what religion you are. And for me on a personal note, God means wisdom.

Fahim, the Bible is extremely old. It is in all roman numerals and the date that is in the front cover says Instituted in London in the year 1804. I can't tell if this is the actual copywright date or if it has a different meaning, I'm not sure. The Bible belonged to a family member of my grandfather whom handed it down to him. He handed it down to my mom who handed it down to me. Family heirloom. The watch is actually new. It is my watch that I wear all the time but I thought it had the right feel for the photo. Had it been any different watch I'm not sure I would have done this photo. I am trying to put together other ideas for this line of work but it will take some thought and time. ( But time is wisdom ; ).

Jahim, the printers were George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's most excellent Majesty. If you know anything about it, I would love to know anything anyone could tell me.

Hi Minde,

Thanks for the background. Now where does this stand? Are you going to work further on this theme of "Wisdom and Time"? I would imagine that wisdom comes with time and wisdom stands the tests of time. That's what proverbs try to express. This is an excellent subject to explore.

Wisdom:

A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't.

Now that Jim is a wise saying! You either have smart grandparents or you have developed wisdom in earning your grandfather stripes! I like it when the bible is used as a scaffolding to build values.

Interesting. My initial gut reaction was that this is about two symbols, one of earthly values and one of spiritual values. This isn't any old watch, it's a bejewelled symbol of the worship of Mammon (riches), whereas the Bible is a symbol of the worship of (heavenly) God.

Anyway, that's how I saw it and my reaction to Minde's statement, "One is very important to me while the other I wish was less important. "

Personally I would like to see a clear closeup of the watch! (what does that say about me, eh? :) )

Interesting - I hadn't thought of the watch as being a symbol of mammon, thogh of course you're right. I had taken a more literal view of the watch representing the time pressure that seems to dog so many of us - perhaps pushing my own experience into the image.

No man can serve two masters remains true.

Mike,
What you said is so true. My thinking when I took this photo was that so often time (or lack of it ) distracts me from the more important things in life. I've always been taught that God should come before everything and these days things seem to be so rushed all the time. I will sadly admit that I look at my watch more my bible. The watch is no longer with me unfortunately. I took it in to be repaired one too many times. The thing I love most about this photo is seeing all of the different views people take on it. It means different things to different people.

Asher,
I have not gotten it printed yet. Any suggestions for what to print it on and the size it should be would be appreciated. (It would be something more for me to hang in my house). Thanks everyone for including your personal views. I still have the bible and I'm trying to come up with some more ideas.

I wouldn't print them too big. If it was me they'd go on Ilord Gold Fibre Silk and be about 10.5 by 7, so you'd need to get a bit closer to look into them.

We pay a great price for the rush we, so easily, get sucked into.
