In the town of Maluay,Zamboangita (Philippines) 35 kms away from Dumaguete you can reach Malatapay Market. Inside the busy part of Maluay, you can see the port going to Apo Island. We went there around 4am to catch a boat so we can shoot sunrise at the other side of Apo. Unfortunately, locals find the shark infested waters and strong waves too perilous to have a trip that early.

So just to wait and kill time we shot sunrise at Malatapay coastal. Good thing there are interesting foreground at that area and the sunrise isn’t that bad at all! See the island there? That’s Apo!

Hi Karlo,

What have you done to the clouds? The foreground is always well imaged but the sky is lost. Do you have this as a RAW file that you could rescue the sky somewhat?

Hi Karlo,

It gives the impression of being clipped, but perhaps there just was no detail. Perhaps toning it down a bit will at least bring back some color.

hi bart thanks for the comment. I can't seem to see where the clipped part in there.. are you referring at the center part of the image.. with regards to details, what details should be in there? these are just honest questions.. that part is where the brightest part should be since that's where the sun is.. i t doesn't even look over exposed for me.. hmmm

I make my comments with much respect and some trepidation, as I don't want to offend you by either just giving superficial praise or being harsh for no good reason. Clouds, like people have features we read. There are fine nuances of shading and changing hues that can readily get lost shooting transparencies or digital where we expose to the right and sometimes, as a consequence, lose a lot of the highlight detail.

So, you might look at your original RAW files and just work on the clouds and see what can be discovered a second time around!

ok thanks again for the deep explanation. So we are really looking into the smallest details in the clouds part? at the center? the tonal colors in between the clouds? Well, Im really thankful for you guys trying to perfect this art. I have so much to learn and I'll look into the raw file again.

Hi Karlo,

I'm not saying it is clipped, it just seems like it is. There may be no (cloud) detail near the sun, but there may be a subtle gradient. We as viewers cannot know what is or is not there, so we can merely ask about it and/or suggest to pay attention to it with Raw development and postprocessing. A slight upwards curves adjustment contrast boost in the brightest highlights might help, depending on what's available in the Raw data. I'm just guessing.
