Jaime Johnson: Bighorn

Jaime,

This is a magnificent animal with an amazingly attractive array of subtly changing browns. This is one image that would lose such a lot in B&W. Do the end of the horns/antler get worn like that from fighting, grazing or just rot? Looks like you found it about mid day.

I believe they "broom" their horns while fighting. We have lots of bighorns around, I just don't spend a lot of time with them. The above shot was taken on Sunday 1/17 at 4:13pm.

I've attached another of the same guy taken the day before.

Great composition color and detail there. Looks like it has a wound healing under the left eye! this is a very informative shot.

I like these shots, Jaime. The light on the first is great.

With all the great shots you post here, there is obviously a huge amount of time being spent on photography - is this your primary career? I'm jealous of how much time you're able to devote to this pursuit.

Also, I notice you're now shooting with the 1D Mark IV. I would be very interested in your experience relative to its performance compared to prior 1D cameras, what it does right, what it does wrong, etc. If you've posted this elsewhere, just send me a link (I generally only monitor the wildlife section of OPF).

Don,

We only have about 600 images through the 1D Mark IV, so there is a lot more time needed to give a good comparison.

With that said I also have to say I love the 1D Mark III (we've actually had three). We've been really successful with the Mark III's and love the professional bodies.

Now, with all that said, the Mark IV is awesome. It has the same look and feel (can hardly tell them apart). It has many bells and whistles that the Mark III doesn't have. Most of these are still untried.. but I really like the focus point rotation. I am constantly changing the focus point (from center to wherever in the image) with moving animals. The new mark IV has the same feature, but also will remember where the focus point is when you change from landscape to portrait. (ex. if I have the focus point set on the bottom left, it would then be top left when I rotated the camera to portrait. But, with the mark IV - it remembers you want bottom left and keeps it there)!

Hands down, the best thing I have found it that almost every shot is in perfect focus. The mark III would be 3 out of 5 - the mark iv is almost every shot. The focus is also really fast - faster than our mark III...

With time, there will probably be things I don;t like, but to date - we love it! A great addition to our camera safe!

Thanks for the info, Jaime - but things would be a lot easier for me (and cheaper too!) if you had just said it was terrible, and a waste of your money!

I'm still shooting with the 1D MkII, and it is very, very tempting to consider moving up to the Mark IV.

I'm sure there will be some negative press at some point, but I sure haven't found anything yet!
