Old people are great to take pictures of but more often then not they are not interested in having them done....The following images are ones i did at a gathering of the Snohomish Historical Society.....I was not paid for this...I was told no flash and no tripod which left me shooting in low light. These were shot with my *ist and a CHEAP lens all hand held...And the guy was a complete ass about it saying the images i took do not tell a story. These images are some of my most complimented ones....Taken in 2007 when i was first starting out....

Again this was rather hard shooting as it was all low light..I think it was all 5.6 with the ISO at 400....

Too many pictures for one post Eric

I'd like the 2nd if it were only sharp. The third is OK. Some of the rest look like family gathering snaps.

Select your best to present here, just like anywhere else, Eric.

Just because you can, you don't have to show us every picture you take.

I love titles and am grateful for the photographer doing the culling for me!

So, Erik,

Charles is on the money. You, not us have to sacrifice you own darlings.

I've picked just the two that represent the event you described the best. The other shots are all memento snaps and lack the finnish and or complete composition of these two I have chosen. (They both should be either in B&W or color).

I still find it strange that your B&W, for whatever reason, tends to lack the darkest blacks! You never have answered me as to why! As for the f stop, be brave. F4.0 is good for two people of you can get take it at 50mm focal length or less at this close distance.

Another From The Shoot.................

This one picture seems to sample best the essence of this crusty anachronistic group of men, served by costumed aged maids, The Historical Society, a spider's web remnant of a past age that someone forgot to clean away. A special image. Good job old chap!

Had To Have a black an white.....

Then this B&W image, with pleasing light from a large window illuminating the faces of two collegial members of this aging august body. I like this almost archetypical college professor like setup. This could be in so many faculty clubs around the USA and the U.K.

I don't think a lot more is needed. The pictures with all the folk in a circle shows little of their faces or character. So I'd not choose that one, but it's pity they weren't all brought by that fascinating window light.

Well, I guess I will have to continue the theme here with one of my favorite shots of two old people in a historical society setting:

Docents_F13404R.jpg

Douglas A. Kerr - Docents 2009

Here we see Douglas A. Kerr, P.E. (Ret.), age 73, and Carla C. Kerr, age 71, dressed to serve as docents (volunteer guides) on the December, 2009 annual historic homes tour of the local historical society in Weatherford, Texas.

The shot was taken in a new (but nevertheless historic) home, the New World Headquarters, in Weatherford.

Charles....As i said at the start of the thread low light, very slow shutter speed..For how i had to shoot them they came out pretty good.

Asher...You sent me a note telling me to post more images in my road trip thread. So when i made this one i just took the initiative. If you can see where the confision came about and if you can show me how to make a 5.6 lens shoot at 4.0 that would be great =)

I see Asher you also caught the centering for me. I tried what Cem had shown me but did something wrong. I'll get it just have to try a few times.

Doug...Thats a very nice picture how long have you been married?

No worry, Eric,

You have done a splendid job but one must focus on the best images of a bunch. When there are too many and varying quality, the post can get totally ignored. The idea is that you make the hard choices and show 1-4 images that represent just the best, the very best.

I hope you like my choices. I don't know the Pentax kit lenses and so I had no idea that they'd give you 5.6 and no wider! What a way to get folk to upgrade!

I dont believe Asher that that lens was a part of a kit...New it cost $100 so its not a very good lens.I think at a certain focal length you can get 4.5 but not at the length i needed. Its kind of funny i broke the tulip lens shade or hood, went to buy a new one, they wanted $60.00 for it!!! The lens with the hood is $100 but the hood by itself $60.00 I just bought another lens....Now i have the 2.8 which i got in late 2009

Also these images were complete candids. Not posed at all....

Elderly Aunts

First two photos of elderly aunts who passed away earlier this year. Forgive me if I've posted any of these before.

Nellie, my mother's cousin aged 84.

Daisy, my mother's sister aged 91.

And if you want really old, Hattie on her 100th birthday. Bright as a button and calling for another cup of tea.

Oh my goodness, Jm, she needs a hug. I wonder if you listen to her stories!

.. she gets them contantly. she's in her 90's walks and exercises every day.. still lives on her own, and has more spunk than most people half her age.. she also has a sense of humor.

The Turkey Sessions (i brought a backdrop and lights to our Thanksgiving dinner )

She's agreed to put on full motorcycle leathers (and anything else i want to dress her up as) for more shots

(now to find leathers that i can rent that would fit someone 4'9" :)

Erik, I'm wondering what your opinion is of this photo of an old woman.

Older as i see a bit of gray hair but shes not old persay....Its dark if it were me i'd lighten it up a bit and i would delete the sign type thing thats by her head. Delete, remove whatever....I'd rather have that ankle fully out of frame so i might crop it up to the edge of her dress, both sides to keep the aspect ratio of the image....Back behind her in the green those light spots i'd clone that out as it tends to draw the eyes to them but not too bad....

I dont know what you want me to say Rachel and i dont want to offend your friend...I might of had her have what would be her right hand some how more flat on the guitar...I have always been told hands unless holding something like grabbing clothes or something are best flat...But in a larger and lightened image the fingers would be more visable so it would not be a issue.

So why ask me this?..I just got home an need some coffee and to do some editing...Hope your doing well Rachel.....

Trick question, Erik. My friend won't be offended because he is an amateur. I posted the image because *I'm* the old lady. And you're right, I wish he'd gotten my entire foot in the shot.

Rachel theres nothing unfortunate about talent of any kind in music....Maybe she will learn to play more then one thing. And if you start learning on the guitar i bet she'd follow that lead =)

I'm partial to the saxophone...Awesome sax solo in a song by Pink Floyd called "Dogs Of War" . I dont know who does it but about half way through the song the sax goes on a unbelievable solo.
