Is Red Sea red?

Well, it all depends…

As side shots, coming back from a photoshoot offshore, I grabbed these…

Sometimes Red Sea is red:

Nicolas,

These are outstandingly moving and even spiritual pictures. I had to underline "is!

Nicolas Claris: Is the Red Sea Red? cut out portion for detail

The first one, above, exemplifies where color is king and rendition in B&W is not a consideration. The image is spectacular and a copy belongs here as an iconic example of the splendor of natural color that cannot be shown in any other way.

Asher

What made the sea like that? Is it just the reflection of the red sky and is it unique to this area? Is it mountain or desert dust or smog that causes this?

Beauty for Beauty's Sake!

Nicolas Claris: "Sight to the Sinaï Mountains!"[/CENTER]

Nicolas,

This simply constructed picture of linear beauty deserves to be pulled out of the collection you've shown.

You bring us soft pastel bars of blended colors and layering of the hills in the distance. This is as close to pure beauty, (without any other motive), as one can get on the planet. Yet it still It invites the viewer to let the mind wonder and ask perhaps even ask questions of ourselves with no attempt at understanding the picture.

When I saw the Sinai (looking from South) I was touched.
Yes, as a non believer.
To be there, in the area where so many things happened which did determinate our present and future life!
This Land for which so many people died. And still do… :-(

I have certainly touched by what I had in mind (see above) but also by the sweet light and delicate air…
Indeed a very rare moment, as normally in this season, this area is windy and the sea is not calm at all…

The first one, above, exemplifies where color is king and rendition in B&W is not a consideration.
Color can also be subtle, at least this is what I tried to catch…

What made the sea like that? Is it just the reflection of the red sky and is it unique to this area? Is it mountain or desert dust or smog that causes this?
It is just the reflection of the pinky sunset sky (very short in time!).

Thank you Charlotte
You're right, but, as a non believer, I haven't used the word "spirit" to avoid any misinterpretation…
In a non religious sense, for me, 'spirit' would be exactly the right term.

Hi Nic

These are just what I needed for this dreary grey Monday morning - thank you! They're just beautiful, they convey a mood of peace, calm and tranquility to me, they'd make wonderful prints....

Hi Jan, indeed.

Nicolas has caught a very interesting view here. It combines the peaceful pastel tinted scenery with action/speed in a subtle manner. I also like his first 2 images that started the thread, and his attention to details, like a level horizon, and the in/exclusion of details to suggest scale.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks jan
This one is also one of my fav…
Can you imagine: I flew 3 different planes to get there, leaving Bordeaux (a snowy day, airports being partly closed) at 7:00 am and arrived in Urghada at 3:30 next morning (after having paid in Le Caire some backshish to allow my lenses to come into the country)… then, here goes for a 3 days shooting then leaving Urghada at 4:30 am, 3 different same planes in the other way and arrived in Bordeaux under grey sky and so cold…

Phewwww… ! now PP!

That's the sort of thing that gets me really wound up - hope it didn't you ;)
Bonsoir Jan
Well it does when it's when I arrive on location (yes it happened). When I'm back, it's not really a problem… (I have all spare razos I need ar home ;-)
But that's the reason why I ALWYAS get my principal gear with me when boarding the plane. There's the minimum list I won't leave without…

Nicolas, only after studying these splendid pictures can I now answer your question; ' is the red sea red?'.

The pharos and later the arabs new the answer all the time,
The red sea is the color that which can only be conjured up by highly skilled artists who hold the
secrets of the Tombs!!

Lovely work.

Wow. Nice shots. Such nice colors. They really evoke an emotional reaction. Well done.
Is it red? Is it blue? You are so lucky to have been on a boat on the Red Sea. I made it as far as the beach at the Red Sea. I would have loved to have been on a boat on it. I was in Aqaba, Jordan for 3 windy days. I had been hoping to snorkel the wonderful coral reefs but the wind reduced visibility considerably.

Jeez. As I type this I get a pop-up message indicating you just sent me a PM about the sharpening action. That kind of freaked me out, especially since I have a bottle of Bordeaux beside me waiting to be opened this weekend for Valentines!! - ha ha.

Was it blue/ was it red? All i can say is that in my experience the Red sea was mighty CROWDED!!
