Warped jetty - Derwentwater

I decided to work on this shot instead of the one posted previously, this is where I've got to at the moment, it's turning into one of those shots that's driving me nuts in the attempt to get it to where I want it to be, I think I've reached the conclusion that it's not possible for me to make it look the way I want it to, the fact is the light was dull, grey, flat, I think the best thing is probably to reshoot on a better day. Please let me know what you think to these, positive or negative, please be honest.....

Janet, in these latest images I am seeing the light in the scene for what it is, 'cos you are paying more attention to it, it doesn't look that great.
Whereas with my B&W 1:1 crop, I was concentrating more on the form of the jetty and the low hills on the other side of the lake, with the tones in the sky.

I really like your image, I think it has far more potential. What are you using to PP this image?

Hi Paul

You're right - thank you for your honesty, I appreciate it.

I just can't seem to get these right! either they look way over processed or just downright dull - or both, I'm frustrated by the fact that they seem to have more potential than I've been able to get out of them so far.

I've tried processing the RAW files in both DPP & Aperture and then worked on them in Photoshop Elements.

I would probably be as well to make up my mind whether I want to process these as colour or b&w instead of trying both! I think the colours are too dull and lacking, if pushed they seem to look overdone. I'm disappointed with my ability/lack of it to bring out the best of these shots!

I use Lightroom2, and I find the Adj. Brush and Graduated Filter tools useful, its what I used for your photo. For my Dodging & Burning I use Photoplus X3, it does this sort of thing well enough.

Hi Paul

I recently blew my budget on a new Mac, now I'm used to the Mac, time to invest in new software too I think!

I too think it would be better in B&W .
Easier said than done. My own attempts at B&W conversion often fail to create a better shot.

Hi Phil

I've managed to get a few better versions out, but I'm still not happy with them, so I'm going back to reshoot, it's just over 2 hours drive from where I live, so I'll go back as soon as I get a nice day when I'm free.

I'll post the results from my next trip.....
