Yes, it's satisfying that one sees this caring in the elderly. It gives us a sense of more security as to our own future. Will we b alone and who will be considerate of us at that more fragile time.

Having said that, one can ask, "What is going on here?" I will add that your interpretation might be over sentimental and wishful thinking! It could equally be that the guy has lost some of his marbles and the wife fears he'll trip up and break his leg and then she'll have even a greater burden in looking after a guy who hardly speaks to her. Loyalty and responsibility often replaces affection, but can masquerade as such.

Still, this image, as often is the case, asks us to consider social consequences of or relationships. This one is powerful in that respect, not for it's apparent revelation of continued love, but rather for it's ambiguity here and for our own future. After all one can even be in bed with someone and utterly alone!
