Not all apartments in NYC are high end. Not all come with fancy balconies.
When the temperatue climbs you "make do".
At night, you head to the roof.
During the day, the crowds can be found on the fire escapes.

John,

This is an interesting shot showing a slice of urban life in tight vertical living spaces. Look how adaptable we are, making these iron frame balconies emergency baclony into social lounges!

I like this John, the guy with his head stuck out of the window caught my eye straight away, well observed! I can't help but wonder how many more floors of people on the fire escape there were, would have made a great vertical pano.....

Hi Jan, that guy sticking his head out was also was really caught my attention at first. Making a vertical pano would involve some setup work (and possibly the use of a tilt/shift lens). When shooting impromptu in the streets, one has to think and act quickly. Luckily for us, John can do that very well indeed :)

Hi John,

I really love the atmosphere of this picture and the composition is very nice. Thanks for sharing, it brings back sweet memories of NYC <sigh>

Cheers,

Yes Asher, adaptable they are (especially the young folk!) I, though might have a problem squeezing out a bedroom window

This is similar to a snapshot of many major high rise cities - such as here in Tokyo, Singapore etc
That's true Damien, you'll find a certainly similarity in most urban enviroments. Behavior especially.

Hi Jan, thanks for looking! The original image didn't have anyone else above, however there were a few more occupied to the right. I've played with the original image any number of times but could never get everyone displayed to my satisfaction...I think it has most to do with the acute angle in which it was shot.

Hi Cem, Thanks and you're so right about the vertical pano - I'm not usually encumbered by a tripod and more than likely the moment would have been lost. So many people were ducking in and out of the windows! You and Jan both saw what I liked about the image - the guy popping his head out of the window. Truth be told, I never saw him whilst taking the image. He was a gift once I viewed the contents of the memory card later that evening!

Love it John

Hi John

Thank you for posting the full size original, it's interesting to see more of the building, which is completely different to what I imagined it would be, I thought it would be much taller for some reason.....

John,

I just realized that there's a guy in the window on his cell phone. That's interesting as I've looked at te picture many times before. However it's part of the way the eye works here. The first window is a base from which we move to the important and demanding mass of folk on the fire escapes. We have no choice but to go there and pay attention as there's a lot gong on and powerful black lines of the iron structure underpinning that section.

Actually, the man in the window could have been holding a pistol to his head and I'd likely have not noticed. This shows how the bran ranks things according to likely importance in terms of our survival benefit. If you wanted to make that guy important, then would the rest of the picture still work?

Hi John, interesting and very symbolic sample of urban lifestyle. The guy at the window... my vote for him too hehe... This is my theory, he was having a hard time trying to get a nap because of all the noise so he went on and grabbed his voice recorder to get the evidence he needed to sue the whole building.

Asher, interesting how the eye works, eh? We all zero in different things I guess.
Ruben, Fahim, thanks very much for taking a look and the compliments, it's very much appreciated.
