Jaime Johnson: Snow Geese Migration

There is an annual snow goose migration near Choteau Montana. It is impressive, numbers thus far are over 50 thousand.

The fields are white with geese. We park and photogrph them where they land Z(often as close as 40 yards). Then, for no apparent reason - they will all take off at the same time. The sound is unbelieveable - but the sight tops that!

We've been there for the last two days - shot about 40 gigs through the Mark III and Mark IV...

Splendid as always!
What a wonderful capture!
The closest I've ever come to seeing this has been through the screen of a televsion.
I cannot imagine the grandeur and magnitude of seeing it first person.
Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful images, Jaime. I went to a similar situation at Bosque del Apache in New Mexico several years back - it's an awesome sight to see and hear!

The one in the mid left edge squawking the most especially nicely caught. Now how come they flu with their legs so lowdown? Is this part of their aquatic development that they compromise and are not streamlined for faster flight like other birds.

This was taken right after takeoff (about 2 seconds) - they tuck their feet up after the are in the air!
