Early morning as the sun was just peeking up over the horizon. Herons everywhere, but not here at this time.

100 miles....I'm going back to this place next Wednesday morning...have to leave my house by 4am because the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge is in Eastern Time.

Yeah. Florida is in two time zones. From the Apalachicola River to the Atlantic Ocean is in Eastern Time Zone and from the Apalachicola River to Spanish Fort (and beyond until you hit New Mexico), it's Central Time Zone.

At the refuge, is there a gate and are there fences to keep people controlled so they can charged an entrance fee at dawn?

I have no idea what the cost is as I have a National Park Pass which also covers National Wildlife Refuges. As to gates...yeah but one whole side is open to the Gulf of Mexico, so by boat you could get in anytime.
