5Ds R Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla)

Just testing the high ISO of the 5DS R on subjects that it was not marketed to handle. :)

The Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla) (formerly considered as a subspecies of the tricoloured munia Lonchura malacca atricapilla), also known as black-headed munia, is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Hawaii.

Before 1995, it was the national bird of the Philippines,[2] where it is known as mayang pula ("red maya") because of its brick red patch on the lower back which is visible only when it flies. (This distinguishes it from other birds locally called maya, notably the predominantly brownish "mayang simbahan" (tree sparrow)[3] which is more common in urban areas.)

Pao,

So what;s your opinion. Can you give us 100% crops of the various parts of the bird and some leaves too.

Did you have noise to deal with? How did it handle the 800 mm focal length? did you use the IS?

I think the 5DS R is an awesome body to have if you need 50MP. If not then you are better served waiting for the 5D Mark IV or buying a 5D Mark III now. This assumes the lens you have is completely compatible with the Mark III.

Will post 100% crops later.

Didn't do any denoising at all.

It feels nice in the hand although I may buy a battery grip for it sometime in the future.

IS was turned ON. I never turn it off unless I am shooting video.

I love the idea of 50MP for bird photography as that can really increase the reach one needs for getting decent sized images of birds and other wildlife.

I am using the Sony A7 R and appreciate the difference of 34 MP over 18 or 24 MP.

So 50MP must be wonderful!

Wonderful photo. Detail seems to be well maintained in the very bright beak, along with the black head - a challenge for exposure which looks well done.

50MP! That's something to think about. Tremendous pixel density.

I really would like to try the photographs but my LR 5.7 can't read the files...

I would like to make some crops and see by myself ...

Well, never mind. :)

The image is fantastic. The detail and the bokeh ...

I use Apple Aperture 3.6. I think Photoshop 6 with the updated Camera Raw can make it work.

You should do what makes sense to you. I've been stuck with a 5D Mark II for 6+ years. Time to upgrade.

Then, to work one of your images is - for me - out of question unless you make a tif available.

I do not see myself with a month payment just to have CS6 or LR 6.

CC 2014 couldn't open them as yet. I'll try to find the update for Adobe Raw Convertor after Father's Day get together!

So appreciate you making these files available!

Thanks Antonio, Don and Asher and your welcome.

I added Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM image samples. These were taken at a party with a 580EX II attached.

This was where I encountered an “Err 20” when I shot stills after taking 3 to 6 minute videos. Hopefully this can be solved with a simple firmware update.

Other image samples include Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM and Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM.

All of the images shared are not how Canon marketed the camera to be used as. ;)
