Here's some more from my New Mexico trip, this time in B&W:

Wonderfully Aggressive 3 D Worlds in B&W

Umesh,

These pictures are very well rendered to B&W but even more so to present a 3D sense in the delivered photograph. Could you share your workflow. I'd love to see how you develop this sense of "aggressive 3D" so I can give more informed feedback on these dramatic presentations.

I guess the 3D nature is due to use of tripod (for minimal shake and better alignment) and the HDR workflow.

The above images were shot with D700, 7 exposures auto bracketed - of which i generally use 3 for merging (0, +/- 3EV). Imported into LR 2.5 and merged via Photomatix. HDR was merged for natural look. Then exported into Photoshop CS3 - and converted into B&W using Nik Silver Efex, Sharpened via Nik Sharpener (creative and display sharpening). Re-imported into LR with Zero'd preset, and exported as JPEG.

Summary: I have found that HDR B&W are really stunning, and have more impact than their color versions.

I agree with you Umesh, I think colours would distract in this instance, the shapes and textures are best left to speak for themselves in b&w - works for me. As i have a bit of a 'thing' for gnarled trees, I prefer the 1st one, but they're both great, thank you for showing us these.

I'm always a sucker for great B&W and these are great! I agree that color would just be more ordinary SW US images. Thanks for sharing.

Umesh,

Very nicely done!
I especially like the first image, so dramatic!
I've tried on and off with a bit of HDR B&W but nothing comes close to this.
Thanks for sharing.
