A Little Bit of Soul, a Little Bit of Rock & Roll

Have had the opportunity to shoot at a local Back Stage Music Event held each Friday evening for a few hours. It's cheap at $5.00 per show but the lighting, while decent is not great so as not to fry either the musicians or audience members.

In most cases, I am shooting between ISO 6400 and 12,800 with the desire to try for ISO 8000. I am shooting the Nikon D810 and in most cases the Nikkor 80-400 4/5.6 as getting close to the stage is difficult when the audience participates by dancing. I bring a small stepstool to get a bit of a height edge. 1/160 down to 1/10 all handheld as mono/tripods are not allowed.

Great shots Chris, you've got the mood happening.
I love the the drumstick trail too, great timing.
Interestingly I was shooting musicians in low light just yesterday afternoon.
Nothing worth posting here but when I got to the door I was warned about the lack of light inside, I pretty much patted my camera bag (with the D810 inside) and said " yeah, I reckon I'll be right!"
I went with 85 mm lens at F2.5 or 4 and ISO of 4000.

Remarkable set! Couldn't do this well ten years ago without much more effort. Than goodness to advances in camera sensitivity.

But having said that, these are well composed! It's actually hard to photograph some singers with their face against a mike and stand. To also "get" some of the atmospherics, as in the first 4 pictures, is especially admirable.
