A Monochromatic Approach: Seeing Alcoy Beach

A 2 day celebration at Carcar and Alcoy. Food-trip, pictures, waves and a couple of Tequila sunrise in there. Birthday celebrants were Cherry, Victoria, Me and Choi. Chillax mood again and I must say our first night at Carcar was fun haha. Verdict: An extension is a must, Bitin!!!

Will start off with some of our groups shots then I'll follow it up with the Seascapes/ Coastalscapes I got at Alcoy Beach front. If only we can extend another day at Alcoy and get wasted all together haha!

Hi Karlo,

I enjoy your seascape series. The foregrounds are usually interesting enough to allow a wide angle perspective, and you pay attention to the composition.

However, I'd like to ask an honest question. Why the Black and White? Do you feel that the added abstraction from reality brings something extra?

Personally I prefer color images, maybe that's got something to do with it, but I don't see the added value in many black and white renderings. It also deprives us from utilizing an additional compositional element, Color. Especially with seascapes the warm tones in the foreground, and the cool tones in the background (except for sunsets), create another depth clue. Good B&W is very hard to do, it requires a very strong composition.

If you are only exploring the possibilities in B&W, perhaps you could try a high key approach where the rocks and other foreground elements stand out against the pale surroundings. I suppose that tweaking the color balance or Hue, Saturation, and Lightness of Blue would allow to lighten the sea and sky. Then the composition of light and dark becomes the most important element in an abstract rendering.

Just some thoughts,
Bart

hi bart thanks for the inputs. I'll tell you honestly I got inspired with the black and white images of my friends. I want to try it out myself but the difference is they are using IR converted to Mono. I just want to try if I'll be able to make a rendition of my images closest to theirs.

BNW is HARD! its not just conversion, there are a lot of technical tweaking to be made. For me BNW still gives that drama we're all looking for given the right composition. Ultimately, i just want to explore and try out new things. Hopefully ill get a crack at BNW someday.

much respect,
karlo
