Anti Corruption Rally

There was a huge anti corruption rally /demonstration in December 9, 2009 (anti corruption day) in Jakarta. The rally took place all over Indonesia, but the one in Jakarta was centered in Monas Square (National Monument Square) in the heart of Jakarta. Thousands of people attended the rally, I think more than ten thousands participated in this rally.

This square is not far from the presidential palace, practically it's accross the street from the presidential palace and back in the Soeharto era (the old regime which fell in 1998), it's considered a Ring 1, a sterile area where no demonstration was allowed. Well back then no demonstration was allowed anywhere in Indonesia. My brother was sentenced to 1 year in prison in 94 for taking part in a demonstration, even though he was there as his campus newspaper photographer.

Days before the rally, the government issued warning about the potential danger of the rally. Even the president during his speech broadcasted by tvs warned that the rally has a huge potential to turn into a riot or a social unrest.

My office building is not far from the square and the previous day I just got my 7d back from canon for calibration with my 24-70. So I decided to go to the rally to test my camera and photograph the rally. Here are some of the pictures I took during the rally.

Two guys standing with arms folded, gazing straight ahead with serious faces,

listening to the speakers.

The rally ended peacefully.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the interesting story and the potentially interesting images. But why so small? It is not possible to see them properly at this size. Or are you worried about privacy aspects?

Cheers,

Hi Cem,
I will fix it. I was affraid that the images would be too big to be posted here.

Hi Bob,

Normally, we expect to see images sizing from 600pixels wide to 800. For special pictures with lots of details or for panos, you can post even larger ones. If you want to change the image links, you have to do it quite soon because after a while (I guess some 30 minutes or so), the editing option is automatically closed for members. After that, you can always ask the mods to do it for you.

Cheers,

Hi Cem,

I don't know what's going on. The pics I uploaded are 800 wide, but still show as small pic.

I see that you've hosted the images on flickr. Please take a look at this thread for some additional info, it might help. What is see is that the urls point to the medium sized images and not to large ones. Ask for more info if needed.

Cheers,
