At last: Some pictures from South India

Just 2 portraits for you to comment please.
Thank you. I do have more ! :)

Hi Antonio,

Spontaneous assocations....

- uniformed children.... I expect some controlettis or priests in the background
- she does not like you to photograph her.... she is not comfortable with that lense in her face
- a chap with a stick..... what else?

- streetlife.... the strongest picture to me.
- still enormous poverty beyond comprehension
- imported economic boom, or in my words... imported predator capitalism, behold the sheep!

Antonio - when doing arranged, controlled shoots that involve people it's easy to get them to sign a model release form - but obviously the people in a place like India wouldn't understand what a model release form is (I'm assuming) so what did you do? In the posed shots I presume you asked them if you could take their picture but in the non posed shots did you still ask permission or just snap away? What lens were you using? Very nice images too!

Edit: What would the "rules" be when it comes to street photography and displaying images of people on your website? Surely there's no way you could get model release forms signed...?

Theo.

I always ask if I can photograph the person: by gestures or adressing the person.

I think that people really don't know what that is. Or simply don't know of it's existance.

In Portugal it happenned to me that people just don't want to be shot. And others just say: OK I wouldn't mind.

What else am I supposed to do ?

I used a 20D with 24-70mm f/2,8

Cheers.

I was in Portugal last year and it was HOT! :) A group of us were on holiday in Saldanha in Lisbon then travelled to Porto & Coimbra and then took a train to a festival at Lake Idanha-a-Nova - if you know of the place?

Lake Idanha-a-Nova is so beautiful it's such a pity I didn't have my camera with me because of the dust at this venue. Oh well it just means I get to go back again and enjoy more hot weather and sunshine.

Hi Antonio,

In that case - go back :) But I liked the painting and want to see more of it as well as those doors - I guess for elephants to pass through? And yes, Indian women with saris (preferably slim ones) and bare mid-rifs are always a winner!

The problem with tours is you arrive at the sites at the wrong time of day (too harsh light and contrasty) and you are forever hurrying to catch up. With this in mind, you did very well to get the shots you did. And seriously - do go back, India is huge and exciting ... I have only been to South India once and that was in 1980, but have been to the north every few years. Like Europe, there are just too many cultures, languages, cuisine to comprehend in a tour.

Yours

Ravi

Hello Ravi,
You are right about the tours. But we are not retired and we have just those days to travel.
I have to tell you that I was shooting with 2 cams: 20 D + 16-35 + 430 EX + CPF and 350 D + NDF + 24-70.
I am sorry but we are not intending to go back to India.
We have been to the North already the year Pakistan dropped the 1.st atomic bomb. They were waiting for us to do us ! :(
We do know - better: We have been to many countries in the Peninsula of Indochina, in fact we have been to all of them and the one we most liked is Myanmar, Burma.
A terrible dictatorship, a marvelous country with marvelous people. A must go ! I do recommend !
I have told my wife and to some friends of ours, that we should go back there again someday.
The World is too big and our life is too short. :)

May be when we are retired if we have Health we will travel even more (?).
My son just came from Canada. He was very impressed with the country.
But the weather ... Oh boy.
I am too old to emigrate.
Cheers.
