Backstage…

While our models were working on their make-up, I was waiting on deck…
The boat was anchored in a tiny anchorage were only one boat could anchor.
This was in a small island (one of the Friouls) facing Marseille in the Med. This is a "Natural reserve" to preserve wildlife, fauna and Flora.
Harsh midday sun light…
I heard some curious "noise", I turned myself to see the land and saw this little guy crying… scared? calling for food?
I grabbed the 1Ds3, put the 500 mm and shot handheld, no way to swim closer…

Sorry, Nicolas - have been preoccupied by some family health problems (nothing serious, but time consuming).

Cute little guy! And I like the open-mouth pose. I'm also impressed by the resolution of that camera - quite a lot of detail for being relatively small in the original frame.

Hi Nic

I can almost hear his bewildered cries! I really like the first one of him/her and the one of the parent apparently oblivious to the cries!

I liked your ice skaters too, I'm wondering what next........? Looking forward to it ;)

Hi Don
No need to be sorry, I do hope that the health problems are really not serious…

Yes the 1ds3 has a lot of resolution, I should have added the 1.4 TC but the girls (not gulls, LoL) where ready so…

I think the IQ can even be better has I processed these with my loptop with uncalibrated monitor…

Thanks for taking time to comment!

Hi Nic

Nice:) As you say, a lot of resolution if you have a high enough shutter speed. I did some shooting from a boat rolling in the north sea the other week and found that I needed to get to quite a high shutter speed before the motion blur was not very evident, even with IS on. Also, getting the horizon vaguely level was a lottery.

Will you follow your architecture with some wildlife work, or back to the boats?

Those are nice and interesting Nicolas.

I've tried shooting birds from my boat and unless the water was calm it was quite a feat.

Hi Mike and Ron
yes speed, speed and you know what? speed!
Notice that these shots were made at 1/6500s wide open and even for the mMother (or the father) I pushed the ISO to 400. Better be sharp and a little noisy than blurred…
I also have quite the use to shhot from boat so, my legs are quite stable ;-)

The next forseen shots are boats, I'm happy to get slowly into the architecture niche as I do like that… as for the wildlife, it was only as I was there at the right moment, just for the fun… These images of gulls are more grabed snaps for the fun!
BTW it also shows that when we care our nature, we get amazing free animals around us. Marseille is the 2nd city of France (though rthe guys from Lyon would tell you the contrary ;-) and these islands are just 3 miles from the city!
