Bait and Switch: Destruction by blogger! Street justice or a good thing?

I found this interesting blog Here is the essence of how it began.

Comparison Shopping on Sale - Forbes.com said:
: From Forbes: "While the vast majority of user reviews and merchant ratings provide a useful service, online shoppers can still get caught by disreputable merchants. One blogger, Thomas Hawk of San Francisco, recently attempted to purchase a Canon EOS 5D camera that he saw listed for $2,899 at PriceRitePhoto—the lowest price online at the time. Hawk checked and found positive store reviews, but after placing the order, Hawk claims he was contacted by a PriceRitePhoto, employee who tried to sell Hawk expensive accessories to go with the camera. When Hawk declined, the employee said the camera was no longer available and threatened to charge Hawk’s credit card and never send the camera

Well Steve has a blog and so he reported in episodes and the story quickly was framed as a little David versus a opwerful Goliath that had to, for the public safety sake, be destroyed.

It grew with angry in blogs and a cacophony of calls blocking up various business telephone lines, companies being expelled from verious trading arrangements wiith purported involved or related companies without any proof of who was actually guilty! This thing took a life of its own.

Worse than this, someone is smart to connect these companies with "hasidic Jews". That was really sad and totally uneducated.

As a start, mothers should tell their children that valuable things that are a bargain mostly are not! Not a very difficult concept one would think, yet grown men and women who are smart enough to earn money imagine they can get a $7500 1DSII for $4,000!

Anyone who thinks they are getting a bargain has to think twice or check in to the local center for the brain challenged!

The smart thing to do is to check reputation with resellerratings.com or ask in a forum related to what you are buying, be it camera or car or sewing machine!

The unfortunate proliferation of many stores by one or two unscrupulous switch and bait retailers should not be used to tarnish the character of true hasidism.

The latter by definiton would never bring shame to the Jewish people by doing anything dishonest.

A good example of typical Hasid behavior is that of B&H Photovideo. Yes they close on saturday and the Jewsih holidays and that can be an issue if you don't know about it. However, all over the world, B&H are recognized as the most honest and reliable dealers.

A case in point. I ordered a 21mm Distagon for my Canon cameras as I needed a great wide angle lens. None were available since Contax was going out of business. I ordered in October for $1600 and gave up by December since the lens was now selling used for up to $4,000!

Sure enough, out of the blue in february 2006, a little brown box arrived and I thought it must be a mistake as I had forgotten about the order. It was a brand new unused 21mm distagon in perfect wrapping. Now any lesser company would have simply sold it for more than double!

I called B&H and my salesman told me "We couldn't have done that as it wasn't ours to sell, we had already made a contact with you and couldn't then go back on our word."

These other guys who might masquarade as Hasidim are in fact a disgrace to themselves and everyone else. I cannopt fathom how the Attorney general in NY doesn't jail them for all the harm they cause.

There is a moral to the story which should not be overlooked.

Ethics involves not just what you can do but the distinction between that and what you should do.

B&H are the epitomy of ethical. If they do err, they''l correct it rapidly. The prices are fair and their word is real.

The bait and switch crooks are, of course, beyond unethical. Yet there's one more group to be examined, ourselves!

Sure blogs have the power to rise up and destroy Goliaths. However, all Goliaths are not deserving of being destroyed. That is where ethics comes in.

A blog can be enlightening or just entertaining. it can also be a light shining where we need to go.

Unfortunately it can also be destructive and we need to be very careful in using this huge power. It is not that a blogging "David" has just a little sling against a giant goliath, rather a lighted match to throw where it might cause more destruction than ever imagined.

In this case, it is probable but not certain that bad guys were harmed. However, we do not know. We haven't the faintest idea. One blogger has, in fact, perhaps unwittingly, been the judge and jury.

Still, i like his photographs. That is where he is on good ground, not the police work where because of his bad experience he is not seeing clearly perhpas the consequence of what can so easily happen. One might without evil intent, spread an infective rumor where someone else becomes an enemy of the people! For that to happen in a civil society with laws and accountability, is a tragedy akin to lynching.

Thanks, Asher

Sometimes we just have to speak out when we see things as wrong. I won't get up too high on my soapbox here, but, I will say that we do need to speak up when we see mis-information and hatred out there with respect to things like this. We will never know how many of the 6 million lives that were lost would have been saved had the world spoken up and not turned the other way.

On the plus side, I'd been waffling about buying something else (not in the budget) at B & H and so I finally hit the "ADD to CART" button and I am expecting a 24-105 later this week. Now all I need to do is get out there and point my lenses in the right direction!

Good luck on your lens from B&H. That's the lens I use and i'm so happy with it. I have gotten to by a lot for B&H since it removes headache and anxiety and they have as good prices as anyone who can actually deliver the lens.

Yes we should speak out when things go wrong but also measure what one says so that we don't damage people.

Everyone should have resellerratings.com memorized and bookmarked and always consult them before chasing after a bargain price.

Thanks for your kind words. B&H works hard to earn and keep the reputation we enjoy and we appreciate this acknowledgement.

I buy everything from B&H and one other dealer with about 90% from B&H. I always have what I ordered in three days. A year or more ago I ordered a lense that I thought would be exactly what I needed. It turned out not to be what I was looking for. I called B&H and explained the problem. They said to put it in the original box as I got it and send it back. No hassel at all. The same day I ordered the canon lense that I should have ordered to start with and had it in my hands in three days. How could anyone ask for more.

Problem Solved, Thank you Mr. Posner

My lighting kit will be complete on Tuesday for a lot less than I had to pay to make it complete just yesterday, thanks to Mr. Posner. He mentioned that his Customer Service Rep felt that additional discounts were needed to make me happy with them. I still made a financial contribution to resolve it, but, let's just say we came to a fair resolution. No one lost in this deal!

I have always done a majority of my purchasing from B&H and I will be more than happy to continue. We all make errors now and again. I learned some things - one being, tell people you know you have a problem, sometimes they can intervene and help solve things. When you tell them, point fingers very carefully, and three don't always stand on princilple, sometimes a happy medium can make it worthwhile.

I had dealings with a very similar situation/company. Although no one threatened to charge my credit card, I did get a call from Western Union a week after the transaction (tried to buy a camera on the cheap, they make you call them to "confirm" your order then try to upsell you hugely expensive memory cards, lense covers etc.)

Talked to a friend who is a Russian Jew who grew up in Brooklyn and he said outfits like that one are all based in Brooklyn and many are run by the Russian mafia through the many Jewish immigrants to the area.

He said that the Hasidics are generally very honest and reliable businessmen.

The simple lesson is that if a price seems too good to be true, it is and you should avoid it at all cost.

I will also now only shop at reliable online stores like B&H and NewEgg (for memory cards, etc)
